Chapter 529
Claire’s POV
With the day of our attack drawing ever closer, the whole of the rogue territory seemed to be buzzing with new life. Almost everyone was out training from dawn to dusk, with celebrations in the evenings. Our victory was assured, and everyone was excited to see it finally come to fruition.
Today, all of the warriors were lined up down the streets of the town. Richard stood on the roof of his home watching us. He was speaking, but most of the warriors seemed like they would probably be too far to hear his
words.
Fortunately, given Sienna’s importance, and my friendship with her, I was near the front, standing in a place of honor beside her and Ian. Both, like me, were looking forward to having their revenge at last. Sienna and I had both training particularly hard to catch up to the other warriors.
I was looking forward to facing Amelia one on one in combat, assuming Damien even allowed her near the battlefield, which I still doubted.
“We have waited for this moment for far too long, my friends,” Richard called from his rooftops. “Tomorrow, we will march on those that have so unfairly cast us out and claim their cushy homes and lives for our own. They will know the strife they have given to us because after our victory, they will experience it for themselves.”
“Let them suffer like they made me suffer,” Sienna said, mostly to herself, but I was close enough to hear her. On the other side of her, Ian placed his hand on her shoulder. She leaned into him.
I rolled my eyes. Who would have thought they would have become some kind of perfect rogue power couple.
The other way, standing near the sidewalk and not looking nearly so enthusiastic was Ethan. Within the rogue territory, there were a group of rogues that wanted to stay neutral. They had tried to convince Richard that we shouldn’t disrupt the lives we had now. That the rogue town was hard earned and enough, and that we didn’t need didn’t need to involve ourselves in outside business.
Richard had dismissed that notion at once and I was glad.
Ethan and Victoria seemed to be of that lot. Honestly, I was surprised that Ethan had shown up to today’s event at all. Though as a former high-ranking member of Damien’s pack, maybe he hadn’t been given much choice.
“They have taken everything from us,” Richard continued his speech. “No longer. Now is our turn, it is our hour. We will take back what is ours! We will retrieve what was taken from us! We will become the ruling class once and for all!”
Many of the warriors cheered, including Sienna and Ian.
Ethan did not, instead dropping his gaze to the ground.
When Richard’s speech was over, I fully ignored Ethan to turn to Sienna and Ian.
“I can’t wait until we are in charge of a pack again,” Sienna said. “This town is fine, but it’s nothing like home.”
“Don’t think too small,” I told her. “Remember that Alpha King Benedict is sure to be at the battle. If things go the way Richard wants, we won’t just reclaim our packs, but the whole kingdom.”

Sienna paused a minute. “Poor Uncle Benedict. If he had only listened to me at the start about Amelia…”
“She has her ways of twisting everyone around her finger,” I said. “But don’t worry. Tomorrow, on the battlefield, if she is brave enough to show up, I will defeat her myself.”
“Rub her face in the mud,” Ian said. “Just like they did to my reputation.”
“I will,” I promised, but I planned to do much worse.
I was going to kill her.
Amelia’s POV
I trained harder than ever, and my skills seemed to increase tenfold. I had even managed to best some of my bodyguards, which certainly took them by surprise. I even managed to do so a few times in front of Damien, which I thought might finally put him at ease.
So far, he had stuck to his word in allowing me to fight, but it was clear he was miserable about it. I had thought seeing me defeat some high-ranking pack warriors might make him feel better, but he seemed just as miserable afterwards as he had before.
“Damien,” I said, approaching him at the end of training.
“I’m sorry, Amelia, I have work to do. If you need anything, talk to Keegan, alright? I’ll be home later.”
This wasn’t the first time he had dodged me since our lovemaking in the woods, and I was starting to wonder if this was going to be a regular event.
Still, given the nature of the stress he was under, I didn’t think he was avoiding me exactly. I was sure he did have work to do, preparing the plans for the battle.
I just thought he might want to try to spend a little extra time with me beforehand. Just in case…
Well. I didn’t want to say.
But maybe I was being selfish.
The stress he was under must have been severe. Maybe instead of expecting him to go out of his way for me, I
should do that for him.
As another day passed, and it became our last possible night to spend together before the battle the next day, I decided that I would pamper him. I went into the kitchen, relieved the cook to make dinner myself.
I spent a lot of time preparing chicken just how he liked it, even making a cheesecake for dessert.
Out last night together was going to be something quiet and perfect. And then after, maybe we would hold each other, gently making love until the morning.
My cheeks heated just thinking about it. I couldn’t wait to see him, to reaffirm our connection not just through ridiculously hot sex but through quiet moments as well.
After finishing the meal, I set the table, preparing for when he usually arrived home.
Then I waited.

And waited.
Realizing that perhaps he needed to work late, I took the chicken back to the kitchen to keep it under heat. No use allowing it to go cold while I waited.
Another hour ticked by, and then another.
Soon it was ten at night, and there was no sign of Damien.
