Chapter 531
Damien’s POV
The next morning, I kissed Amelia awake and we started the day together. She hadn’t yet moved out of the extra bedroom, but she had stayed the night in our shared bed. She seemed rather comfortable there, and I was hoping this would be a regular occurrence again.
We just had to survive today.
And we would.
We got ready individually but at the same time, taking turns in the shower and at the sink. As much as I would have loved to shower with her, in this moment, we had to stay focused.
I couldn’t risk being late for a war, even if it meant being naked with my mate.
When we were dressed, fed, and ready, we left the house and went to the Alpha headquarters building. There, the armies were gathering. Alpha King Benedict was already there, taking charge with members from both my pack council as well as the King’s own council.
“The warriors are ready, Damien,” Benedict said, at the appropriate time. “We will move on your command. But perhaps you would like to say a word or two to our troops beforehand.”
I looked at him curiously. As Alpha King, rallying the troops was his right. Most of these warriors belonged to my pack, but not all. Those that had come from other packs were not beholden to me in any way.
Yet Benedict looked at me expectantly. He wasn’t going to suggest again.
This was up to me.
Amelia squeezed my hand and gave me a supportive smile. As I stepped forward to speak to the warriors, I kept holding her hand. She was my partner in this, in everything. She deserved to be by my side.
“Today, I ask much of you,” I said, speaking loudly to be heard by all. “I ask that you put your lives on the line to protect our pack, our kingdom, our home. But I do not ask you to take these risks alone. Your Alpha King, my Luna, and I will be there fighting alongside of you. This land is ours and we will not see it taken. We will not have our children run out. We will not be destroyed.”
There were so many younger warriors here, many of whom only came into their wolfly powers. Already they were faced with war. How I would have liked to maintain the times of peace.
“We fight so that tomorrow we may rest once more. We are warriors! We will protect our homes and each other, and bring about a time of peace once more so strong that our children will never again know the fear of battle.”
I looked at Amelia once more. “We do this together. Side by side. Until the end.”
The warriors cheered, properly rallied, and the Alpha King placed an approving hand on my shoulder.
“Very well said, Alpha.”
“Thank you, Sir.”
“Now,” Benedict said. “Let us guide our troops to the battlefield and face this enemy.”

“We will win,” I said.
He held my gaze for a moment, and nodded. “Yes. I believe you will,”
You will. Not we.
What was he up to?
There was no time for questions, or further discussion. The warriors were already marching toward the forest and the field we knew the rogues would try to enter through.
I had to stay at their lead, so I turned and joined them.
The opposing army arrived at the battlefield the same time we did. We lined up on either side of the border, facing each other with a quarter-mile in between.
I was surprised by the sheer number of rogues. They seemed to match our forces, if not outnumber us slightly. Though I was confident in the abilities of my warriors.
Among the enemy’s ranks, I spotted Sienna, Ian, and Claire. They were near the front, the leader I assumed to be the Rogue King Richard.
“We will approach to discuss terms,” Benedict said. “Martin, Lillian, you stay here. Damien, Amelia, with me.”
We moved as Benedict said, walking forward.
Richard moved forward too, with some of his advisors. Claire and Sienna came with them, much to my personal annoyance. After they had tried to hurt Amelia so many times, I didn’t trust them not to try something underhanded here, even though we were only supposed to negotiate before the battle.
We stopped a few feet away from each other, close enough to hear and be heard.
“You are looking old, Benedict,” Richard said. “I’m honestly surprised those old bones of yours even worked long enough for you to get here.”
“I am still capable, Richard.”
“It’s Rogue King, to you,” Richard said.
“I’ll be in the grave before I call you that.”
“That can be arranged.”
Sienna and Claire sized up Amelia. A low, warning growl escaped the back of my throat.
“Damien actually let you come,” Claire said. “I thought he might have locked you in a closet… again. Don’t you tire of being a prisoner to your own mate?”
“My relationship with my mate is no concern of yours,” Amelia said.
“Maybe. But he and I still had Stacy together. There’s nothing you can do about that.”
Amelia frowned. “Stacy is mine. Your blood doesn’t matter.”

Claire shrugged. “I’ll make sure she remembers you when she becomes mine again. After this fight, you’ll be nothing but a splatter over a tree.”
My growl grew louder.
“You will pay for what you did,” Sienna said. “All of you.”
