**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah**
**Chapter 54**
**Amelia’s POV**
The air in the room was thick with an unspoken tension, a palpable energy that made it feel as though time had momentarily frozen. Standing at the center of this storm was Eve, a beacon of calmness amidst the chaos that swirled around her. Her presence was almost otherworldly, exuding an aura of reassurance. “We were incredibly fortunate that Amelia possesses some healing abilities,” she stated, her voice steady and soothing, cutting through the noise like a warm light. “Her presence was vital in ensuring your survival, Sienna. Now, she is here to assist me further.”
Yet, despite Eve’s soothing words, Sienna could not conceal the indignation that radiated from her like heat from a flame. She straightened her back defiantly, her eyes flashing with a fierce combination of anger and insecurity. “But I am your apprentice! You can’t just replace me with her!” The sharpness of her voice echoed through the sterile walls, jarring against the clinical backdrop like a discordant note in a symphony.
In that moment, a wave of regret washed over me, crashing against the shores of my mind. I should have remained outside, allowing Eve to navigate this confrontation alone. Why did I allow myself to be pulled into this mess?
“I can have more than one apprentice, Sienna,” Eve replied, her calm demeanor almost mesmerizing in the face of Sienna’s emotional tempest. It was remarkable to witness how this healer seemed unshakeable; Sienna’s outburst rolled off her like water off a duck’s back. “When you regain your strength, you will still have your place as my apprentice. However, you must learn to control your temper.”
I watched as Sienna’s bravado began to crumble, her face losing color, and her shoulders drooping slightly, as though the very fight was being siphoned from her. It was a painful transformation to witness, revealing the fragility that lay beneath her fierce exterior.
Eve stepped closer, her energy radiating warmth and reassurance that felt almost tangible in the tense atmosphere. I felt it was best to remain by the door, allowing Eve to take charge of the situation. She smoothly transitioned into her familiar role as the lead healer, exuding a confidence and authority that was impossible to ignore.
“You know we’ve been short-staffed lately, which makes us fortunate that Amelia volunteered to help,” Eve explained, her stethoscope in hand as she listened to Sienna’s heartbeat. “Now, tell me, how are you feeling?”
“Fine,” Sienna replied curtly, her tone clipped, betraying her inner turmoil.
“The truth, please, Sienna,” Eve insisted gently, her eyes fixed on Sienna with unwavering concern, as though she could see right through the facade.
With a reluctant glance in my direction, Sienna let out a long, frustrated sigh. “I feel sluggish. And my head is pounding.”
Eve nodded thoughtfully, taking Sienna’s temperature and conducting a few more tests. The air was thick with the sterile scent of antiseptic, a constant reminder of the clinical environment that surrounded us.
“The sluggishness is normal and will linger for a few days as your body works to regain its strength,” Eve explained, her tone both informative and comforting, like a soothing balm for Sienna’s frayed nerves. “I’ll see if I can procure something to alleviate your headache.”
“Thank you, Healer Eve,” Sienna muttered, her eyes averted from mine, as if I were a mere shadow in the room, unworthy of her gaze.
Once Eve and I exited Sienna’s room, she instructed one of the orderlies to fetch some aspirin for Sienna. Then, she guided me toward a break room, her expression brightening at the prospect of a moment’s respite. “How about some coffee? Or perhaps a nice herbal tea?” she suggested, casting a quick glance at my stomach, which had been grumbling quietly in protest.
I nodded, not particularly thirsty but grateful for the chance to rest my weary feet for a moment.
As we stepped into the break room, the stark reality of our staffing issues hit me like a wave crashing against the shore. The place was almost deserted, a few chairs scattered haphazardly, and the coffee pot stood as the lone sign of life amidst the desolation.
