Seeing William didn’t exactly shock Jackson. After all, William was Lydia’s uncle. But when he spotted Easton, Jackson felt a wave of dread. He thought about leaving, but by then it was way too late.
Lydia hadn’t bothered asking for details before she came. Malcolm had only told her they needed to check out an official tonight, so she’d just agreed. She never imagined the official in question would turn out to be her own uncle.
She couldn’t help but laugh to herself. Well, this just got a lot more interesting.
Malcolm looked like he might actually drop to his knees and beg Lydia for mercy. This girl, honestly, never stopped surprising him.
William, as Lydia’s uncle, couldn’t hold it in any longer. He got up from his seat, breaking the awkward silence. “Lydia, what are you doing here? And why are you with him?” He didn’t mention Jackson’s name, careful not to say too much. Tonight’s meeting with Easton was for business, and you never knew who might be listening.
Easton stood up too, clearly on edge. “Lydia, you need to explain yourself. What’s your relationship with these two?” He obviously meant William and Jackson.
Jackson narrowed his eyes, focusing on Lydia. “So, Miss Norwood, was this dinner your idea of a setup?”
Lydia shut the door behind her, gave a short laugh, and looked around at everyone. “Let me introduce myself properly. I’m Lydia, currently a special minister with the Inspectorate.”
The whole room seemed to freeze.
William almost lost his balance. Jackson’s eyes went wide with surprise.
Easton, though, was all business. “That’s not what I’m asking. I want to know what you have to do with these two men.”
The Inspectorate had strict rules against close ties with other departments. If you had any, you had to report them right away or risk a full-blown investigation.

Olha a história bem boa só algumas coisas são chatas ( nesse tipo de história sempre troca as filhas pela a da empregada ou então pegam uma menina pra criar) pelo menos eles tratam a filha bem só enche o saco que até agora a Lucinda tá lá enchendo ! Fora isso tá bom Connor é um fofo a família dela a ama muito só Lucinda pra abaixar o nível do livro já era pra ter resolvido isso e fazer ela pagar mais tudo bem li um livro chinês que era parecido só algumas coisas diferentes ,ais mesma coisa tipo ela salvou o Connor no início lá ela salvava o avô dele , no chinês ela não tinha um irmão mais novo com os pais adotivos , a mãe dela tinha 2 irmãos e todos os avós estavam vivos mais história quase igual e tem coisas tipo o triângulo que lá TB tinha até a Lucinda que no chines TB ficou o livro todo aprontando só no final a família descobria e se livrava dela aí ela ia morar com o cara que ela usa pra disfarçar que não gosta do Connor aí depois ainda quase matava a irmã dele e a mãe dele que ele via como ela era...
