After hanging up, Connor waited, a little impatient, until Lydia finally called him back. He picked up right away. “Lydia, did you forget you have a fiancé?”

Lydia couldn’t hide her laugh when she heard the slight whine in his voice. “How could I? I just got back and needed a shower. Relax, babe, okay?”

Just hearing her say that made Connor’s heart feel a little better.

“They didn’t mess with you in there, did they?”

Lydia arched an eyebrow. “Who would even dare?”

Connor let out a small laugh. “I’m glad you’re fine.”

The truth was, once Connor found out that William was about to be promoted to Minister of Foreign Affairs, he figured both he and Lydia would have to go through another round of questioning. It was just a rule, to make sure their relationship didn’t cause any problems at work. What he didn’t expect was that Jackson would get dragged into it too.

Lydia had brought Jackson upstairs just to rope him into the investigation. Still, thinking about Jackson’s real intentions made Connor fume. Just wait until he got back to the Capital. He’d make sure Jackson learned his lesson. Who did Jackson think he was, eyeing his fiancée?

Lydia set her phone on speaker and laid it on the table, rubbing her hair dry with a towel. “When we left today, Jackson was still inside. After this, the higher-ups are probably going to keep a close eye on him for a while.”

Connor snorted. “Serves him right.”

“I thought this investigation might hold him up, maybe even ruin his promotion, but he walked out today like nothing happened.” Benjamin rubbed his face, then scratched at his thinning hair, looking totally frazzled.

Mandy’s brow was furrowed, her whole face tense. “But Jackson is still inside. What if something actually happened to him?”

Benjamin felt his heart skip. He was counting on Jackson to help him transfer departments. The last thing he needed was more trouble.

Rosie looked confused. “Mom, why is Uncle Jackson being investigated again?”
