Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 1175

Just to be safe, Lydia sprinkled a little extra powder near the old woman’s door, something that would help her sleep even more soundly.

The main bedroom door was locked, but Lydia made quick work of it. As she turned the handle and eased it open, she glanced at Lincoln. “Juna and I will go in. You keep watch.”

Lincoln gave her a thumbs up. “No problem.”

Lydia pushed the door open quietly. Right away, a sharp smell of medicine mixed with something much worse filled the air. The room was dim, just a battered old bed and a makeshift wardrobe in the corner. Krista lay on the bed, looking fragile and beaten down, her face drained of color, her eyes dull and lifeless.

Juna froze in shock. She’d heard stories about the Rock family’s glory days. Back when Krista was single, she’d been famous all over the Capital. No one could have guessed that the beloved Ms. Rock would end up like this after getting married.

Lydia, as a doctor, had seen plenty of patients near the end of their lives. She’d seen families who walked away from their sick, and others who spent every last cent to save them. She couldn’t help but feel sorry for Krista.

Krista was only in her early forties, but illness had worn her down until she looked decades older. She couldn’t control her body anymore. She spent her days stuck in bed, wrapped in a suffocating adult diaper. No wonder she tried to rip it off. Who could stand living like that?

She was just... tired. So tired of everything. She’d suffered more than enough and, for a while, she’d thought about ending it all, just to give them what they wanted. But every time the idea crossed her mind, she thought about those monsters, sitting pretty with everything that should have been hers. She couldn’t accept it. She wasn’t ready to give up. Life just felt so unfair sometimes.

Why did fate have to be so cruel to her?

When she heard the door creak, Krista braced herself, expecting Beatrice to come in and yell at her again. She never imagined it would be two young girls. For a second, she wondered if she was dreaming. She’d been locked in this old house for three years now, and except for Erik and Gianna, who only showed up to humiliate her, no one ever visited.
