A few well-heeled young ladues clustered around a girl in a champagne evening dress, showering her with compliments and eager smiles. Nina Powell, though, wasn’t listening. Her eyes were fixed on Carter and Lydia across the room.
Nina was the daughter of a bank president, one of the country’s big four. She and Carter weren’t exactly childhood sweethearts, but they’d known each other for years. She’d been in love with him ever since she first started to understand what a crush was. But Carter was clueless, always saying he saw her as a little sister.
A few days ago, Nina had seen the gossip online about Carter and Lydia. So, when Brody’s birthday came up, she flew back home just to see for herself what was really going on.
One of the other girls leaned in, her voice a little too loud. “Seriously, Nina, Carter is being so unfair. You and he grew up together. Sure, Lydia was top of her class, but your grades were just as good.”
Another chimed in, “Exactly. And let’s be real, Lydia’s family can’t compare to yours. Even if Carter actually likes her, the Shaw family would never let it happen.”
“Right, right. Nina and Carter are perfect for each other,” said a third.
Nina gave them a look and swirled her wine. “Enough already. Don’t you ever get tired of hearing yourselves talk?”
The group fell quiet, glancing at each other.
Nina took a sip of her wine and walked straight toward Carter and Lydia.
Carter and Lydia were just making polite conversation, nothing memorable. Lydia noticed Nina approaching, wine glass in hand, and offered a small, welcoming smile. “Miss Norwood, I’ve heard so much about you.”
Lydia blinked, a little surprised, like she’d half-expected this. She quickly smiled, polite but slightly confused. “Sorry, do I know you?”
Nina smiled back, glancing at Carter. “Carter and I basically grew up together. Since you’re friends with him, I guess we’re friends now too. I’m Nina.” She held out her hand.
Juna, standing nearby and watching, raised her eyebrows. She’d seen Nina before and heard all about her thing for Carter. It was hard to believe Nina wasn’t jealous, but she had to admit, Nina was playing it smart.

thank u!...
thank u for the upload...
the next chapter is exciting...
the next upload is exciting. i cant wait....
Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
