Ready to Rule The Real Heiress Strikes Back (Lydia and Connor) novel Chapter 1228

When Connor heard Lydia was changing her flight, his smile disappeared. His brows pulled together. “Why are you changing your flight all of a sudden?”

Lydia calmly folded a shirt. “I have to go to Nina’s birthday dinner tonight.”

“Nina?” Connor looked confused. “Since when are you and Nina so close?”

Lydia glanced up, meeting his annoyed stare through the screen. She let out a small laugh. “I have something I need to do.”

Connor drummed his fingers on the desk, his tone turning sharp. “Something more important than our date?”

They had promised each other a romantic trip in Country D. Now it was falling apart again. Of course Connor was upset. He hadn’t seen his fiancée in ages.

Lydia paused her packing, a smile tugging at her lips. “Are you jealous?”

Connor scoffed. “Yeah.”

Lydia laughed quietly and kept packing. “Nina’s a girl, not a guy. If you want to be jealous of another girl, be my guest.”

Earlier, Lydia had been turned to the side, busy with her suitcase, so Connor hadn’t gotten a good look at her. Now she was facing the screen, and he immediately noticed how pale she looked. His heart tightened. “Why do you look so tired today?”

Her health was his biggest worry. But Lydia never took it easy.

She waved him off. “It’s nothing. Probably just didn’t sleep well last night.”

Connor didn’t buy it for a second. He was sure the poison in her system was acting up again, but she refused to say a word. Thankfully, Garrett had made real progress with the antidote. He promised they’d have results in just a few days.

“Okay. Just take care of yourself. When you get to Country D, I’ll come pick you up.”

Lydia nodded. “Alright.”

“Lydia.”

Nina spotted her and made her way over, champagne glass in hand and Carter, looking sharp in a suit, right behind her. Nina wore a burgundy fishtail dress, a diamond necklace sparkling at her neck.

Lydia pulled out the gift she’d brought and handed it over. “Happy birthday.”

Nina smiled, her lips twitching. “Thank you.”

She looked beautiful and her makeup was perfect, but up close, Lydia could see red veins in her eyes. It was obvious she hadn’t been sleeping well.

Seeing Nina like this, Lydia knew she’d made the right call by coming tonight. If she’d gone abroad without checking in, Nina probably wouldn’t have slept at all.

Lydia’s instincts were dead on. When Carter told Nina about Lydia’s plans for the evening, Nina finally looked like she could breathe easy.
