Lydia’s fingers hovered over the console for a couple of seconds before she pulled off the robotic control gloves without hesitation.
As soon as the backup lights flickered on, she had already grabbed the traditional surgical tools. The metal handle of the scalpel felt cool and solid in her grip.
The steady beep of the simulated patient’s vitals echoed around her.
“Forceps,” she said, reaching out. Her teammate handed her the instrument just as she glanced, almost subconsciously, at where she’d make the incision.
The view wasn’t nearly as clear as it would be with the robot, but Lydia’s years of practice had turned every move into instinct. Each cut followed a perfect trajectory, as if mapped out by a computer.
When she tied the final suture, the overhead lights snapped back on. The timer read that she’d finished seventeen seconds faster than the robot’s predicted time.
Seventeen seconds. That was huge.
Lydia peeled off her sterile gloves, noticing the faint marks the thread had left on her fingertips.
A real doctor never relies on machines alone.
Next to her, Peyton was almost bouncing with excitement, his voice trembling with relief. “Lydia, why do you think they always throw so many crazy emergencies into medical exams?”
Lydia grinned. “Because real life never gives you time to get ready.”
When you’re right on the edge between life and death, every move has to come from muscle memory and instinct.
There was no suspense about it. Lydia won the championship, hands down.
Noah watched her on stage as she accepted her medal, finally letting out a long breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. This girl, he thought, was something else.
After the competition, Lydia walked out with her medal still hanging from her slender neck.
She heard footsteps behind her, then someone called out. “Lydia.”

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
