The police officer moved fast, barely giving anyone time to react. In one smooth motion, he lunged forward, grabbed one of the robbers by the collar, and yanked him down to the ground. The other guy tried to fight back, but the officer kicked his knee hard, and he crumpled with a groan. Within seconds, both men were pinned and cuffed, the officer’s moves quick and practiced.
Lucinda sat frozen where she was, her whole body shaking. Her face had gone pale, and her eyes filled with tears. She watched as the officer snapped the handcuffs into place, her heart overflowing with relief and gratitude.
“Are you alright?” the officer asked as he walked over, his voice gentle.
He and his partner had actually been following her, under orders from higher up. Lucinda had probably noticed and tried to shake them, which was how she’d ended up in this back alley, running straight into a couple of muggers.
Lucinda shook her head, her voice barely stronger than a whisper. “Thank you. I’m okay, really.”
She glanced down at her bag, checking quickly for her phone and the black card. Both were safe, which made her feel a little better. But the letter… that was gone, washed away down a storm drain. She had no idea what it said, but honestly, it didn’t matter much. Grace had written it. She could always ask her about it later.
The officers took Lucinda back to the station and helped her with a statement. She kept things simple, only describing the robbery and leaving out any mention of the black card or her phone. The police could tell she didn’t want to talk about it, so they didn’t push.
When they saw she was still shaken, they suggested she call someone from home to come get her. Lucinda shook her head and refused. If this had been before, she would have called Cameron or Kylie without thinking twice. But now, things were different. It felt like there was this huge wall between her and them, something she couldn’t get past. Besides, she’d only come out today to pick up a gift Grace had left for her. That wasn’t something she wanted Cameron or Kylie to know about.
After leaving the police station, Lucinda felt like she was drifting. Her cheek still ached, and her heart raced with leftover fear. She felt so alone, with no one to talk to about the mess she was in. She blamed Lydia for everything. If Lydia had never shown up, none of this would have happened. Why did Lydia have to come back? Why now? The more Lucinda thought about it, the harder it was to hold back tears. They finally spilled over, warm and uncontrollable.
