Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 1279

Lydia glanced over at Juna and Carter and said, “Show her what we have.” Carter pulled out a file and slid it across the table to Peyton. The cover was marked with the word “Clones.”

“You work in medicine,” Lydia said. “So you’ve probably heard about cloning research.”

Peyton nodded. She had heard rumors, but everyone knew the United Nations had banned any country from creating human clones. The risks were too huge, the consequences too unpredictable. As she flipped through the file, reading every word, her shock grew. If this file hadn’t come straight from Lydia, she never would have believed any of it.

“Lydia, are you saying… my sister… she’s a clone?” Peyton’s voice trembled. She could barely get the words out.

Lydia nodded slowly. “That’s what we’ve found. Have you noticed anything different about your sister lately?”

Peyton’s heart raced. Alyssa had always been the brilliant one, the one their parents raised to lead the family business since there was no son. She had been the company’s CEO for years, making all the big decisions.

“I… she…” Peyton tried to remember. “Alyssa always looked after me. No matter how busy she was, she’d make time for me, come home for family dinners, check in on Mom and Dad. But lately… I don’t even know when it started, she’s just been so busy. And she’s changed. She’s colder now.”

Peyton paused, swallowing hard. “We all thought she was just stressed from work. Nobody thought there could be another reason. I mean, she looks exactly the same. Who would ever imagine she’d been… switched?”

Lydia’s expression softened. Peyton’s voice shook as she whispered, “Lydia, if she really is a clone, then where’s my real sister? Where did she go?”

The room felt colder all of a sudden. Peyton’s hands started to shake. She never thought something this crazy, this impossible, would happen to her own family. It felt like she was in a bad dream.
