Ready to Rule The Real Heiress Strikes Back (Lydia and Connor) novel Chapter 1288

“You don’t have to feed me. I can eat at the table myself,” Lydia said, her voice gentle but determined. She needed to get used to handling things on her own. She couldn’t see, sure, but her hands still worked just fine.

Connor nodded. “Alright.”

With Connor quietly helping from the side, Lydia managed to finish her dinner. Later, when it was time for her bath, Connor got her clothes ready for her, even her underwear, which made him clear his throat and look away. Once everything was set, Lydia went into the bathroom by herself.

Connor lingered outside the door, his voice soft. “Call me if you need anything.”

“Okay. Just relax,” Lydia replied.

But there was no way Connor could just relax. He stood guard outside, listening closely in case she called for him. About twenty minutes later, Lydia came out, already in her pajamas.

Connor gently guided her to the vanity, drying her hair with a towel before using the hairdryer. When she was finally tucked into bed, he let himself take a breath and went to shower.

Honestly, Lydia could handle more than Connor gave her credit for. She was getting better at doing things alone, even though it made him nervous to watch her fumble at first. Still, he stayed close, helping with everything. He just couldn’t let her struggle by herself. She knew it, and the way he cared for her touched her heart.

The next morning, before dawn, the sky was still gray and rain tapped softly against the windows. Connor got up as quietly as he could, careful not to wake Lydia. He pulled on his hiking gear, slipped a hat over his hair, and stepped out of the room.

Damien was already waiting in the hallway. When he saw Connor, he hurried over and lowered his voice. “Boss, the rain’s coming down hard and the path will be slippery. Maybe we should wait until it lets up?”

Connor shook his head. “It’s okay.”

Without another word, he headed for the mountain.

Connor nodded and hesitated for a second. “Yeah. I’m going to take a shower first.”

“Okay, go ahead.”

Lydia didn’t need to ask. She already knew. He’d gone up the mountain before dawn and only just got back. If he’d found anything, he would have said so right away. She also knew this mountain as well as anyone. There was no second Vision Rejuvenation Grass here.

A little while later, Connor came out of the bathroom and walked over to her. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, holding her close. His voice was rough and low. “I only searched half the mountain this morning. I’ll keep looking this afternoon. I know I’ll find it.”

Lydia started to say something, her voice soft. “Actually...”

“Lydia, even if it isn’t here, there’s a whole world out there. We’ll find it somewhere. Trust me.”
