Kylie was speechless, completely thrown off by what she’d just heard. Frank wasn’t Lucinda’s real father? That couldn’t be right. When they’d been looking for Lydia, they’d dug into everything about the White family. All the records said Frank was Lucinda’s biological dad.
Lydia shook her head. “Frank thinks so too. But the truth is, Lucinda isn’t his daughter at all.”
Kylie could hardly process it. “Lydia, then what does all this mean?”
Lydia finally decided to tell her everything. Grace hadn’t even been called Grace in the beginning. She was a country girl, orphaned young and raised by her grandmother. Her grandmother worried that after she passed, no one would take care of Grace, so she arranged for her to marry Frank. Grace wasn’t even eighteen at that time.
Not long after the wedding, Grace’s grandmother died. Frank had a nasty temper and was quick to hit her. Grace couldn’t take it anymore, so she ran away to find work. But she was a rural girl with no education. She had no idea how harsh the world could be. She hadn’t been in the city long before traffickers spotted her and tricked her into going near the Cloudville border.
She was passed from one person to another, until she met Night Eagle. Grace was still young and pretty then, and Night Eagle took a liking to her, made her his mistress. She got pregnant almost right away. That baby was Lucinda.
Once Grace was pregnant, Night Eagle felt secure enough to let her go, having her handle things for him back home. To cover up Lucinda’s real identity, Grace went back to the White family and told Frank the baby was his. He believed her without question. But after Lucinda was born, Grace left her with Frank and disappeared.
Grace was gone for eighteen years. During that time, she switched the identities of three children and hid herself inside the Norwood family. Lydia figured all this must have been part of Night Eagle’s plan. As for what Night Eagle really wanted, or why he was so determined to have Lucinda marry someone from the Jefferson family, Lydia hadn’t figured that part out yet. Only Grace knew the whole story.
Kylie just stared, stunned. “So Lucinda… she’s Night Eagle’s daughter?”
Lydia nodded. “That’s right. From what we’ve found, Night Eagle has health problems and no other kids. Lucinda is his only daughter. He and Grace would never abandon her.”
As long as Lucinda was at the Norwood house, still within their reach, they could be sure Night Eagle would eventually show up.
Kylie suddenly thought of something. “So how much does Lucinda actually know about all this?”

thank u!...

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
