Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 208

“You’re driving?”

Lydia’s eyebrow shot up as Connor came around to open the passenger door for her, looking more than a little surprised.

Connor just grinned. “What, are you scared to ride with me?”

Without a word, Lydia slid into the seat.

Connor only had trouble seeing at night. In the daytime, he was perfectly fine.

If Lydia’s driving style was all speed and adrenaline, Connor’s was the complete opposite. He drove like nothing could ever faze him. The car glided along so smoothly that Lydia could barely feel the road beneath them, yet he didn’t go slow at all.

From a professional’s point of view, Lydia had to admit he was a fantastic driver. Calm, self-assured, and not the type to show off.

Suddenly, Connor’s phone chimed. Lydia glanced over without thinking.

A message flashed across the screen: [Boss, Miracle Hands was just spotted in the Capital.]

Lydia blinked.

Wait. Was Connor the one offering a billion dollars to find Miracle Hands?

He didn’t notice her looking, his focus never leaving the road.

Lydia thought for a moment, then pulled out her own phone and texted Juna.

[Did you find out who needs the treatment?]

Juna responded right away. [*crying* No clue. Whoever it is, they’re making sure no one can find out. Everything’s brand new, no info to go on.]

Lydia sighed.

A second later, Juna sent another message. [But it’s a billion, Lyds. Seriously, aren’t you even a little tempted? You don’t want to give it a shot?]

Lydia typed back, [I’ll take it.]

Juna exploded, [What?!]

Lydia added, [Tell them not to transfer any money yet. I want to check the patient first.]

That was when Mr. Jefferson finally noticed his grandson hauling an armful of packages from the trunk.

“Lydia, you didn’t have to bring anything. All I want is for you to stop by, sit with me, and have some tea. I don’t need anything else.”

Lydia smiled softly. “My parents sent these. They heard you weren’t feeling well and wanted me to bring them for you.”

Mr. Jefferson’s face froze for a second as if he’d just remembered something. Right, he’d only convinced Lydia to come over by pretending to be sick. He quickly pressed a hand to his chest and let out a groan. “Your parents are so thoughtful. I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately. My chest feels all tight, I get irritable, can’t eat or sleep… What do you think is going on?”

Everyone else just thought, “Nothing’s wrong with you. You just missed your granddaughter-in-law too much.”

Lydia’s voice was gentle. “Let me check your pulse first, then we’ll talk.”

“Of course, of course. But first, let’s get you inside for something to drink and a snack.”

The way Mr. Jefferson smiled and spoke so kindly left the whole household staff in shock.

Was this really their famously grumpy old master?
