Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 257

But Lydia was already gone, heading out with the team to catch Leroy.

Officer Byrne was waiting for news, not expecting much, when suddenly Connor appeared. Byrne was so shocked he almost forgot to breathe.

“Mr. Jeffers…” The words nearly slipped out, but Connor’s glance stopped him cold. Byrne swallowed the rest, forcing a polite smile. “What brings you here, sir?”

Connor was a legend in Byrne’s his eyes. How could he not be? The man used to be a major general, decked out in medals, the kind of person everyone whispered about, wondering how far he’d go. Some even thought he might end up running the whole country one day.

But fate has a way of changing plans. Three years ago, Connor was seriously injured on a mission. He barely made it out alive. If not for that, he’d probably be at the very top by now, both in the military and the government.

“Where’s Lydia?” Connor didn’t waste time on small talk.

Byrne blinked, surprised. Lydia knew Connor? “She’s out on a mission, with the team,” he answered.

Connor’s brows drew together, sharp and tense. He knew Lydia was tough, a real jack-of-all-trades, but he hated seeing her get dragged into everything. One day she was healing someone, the next she was cleaning up corporate messes, and now the police needed her help too?

Byrne didn’t know exactly what was going on between Connor and Lydia, but he could feel the tension coming off Connor in waves.

He rushed to explain. “Don’t worry, sir, we’ll keep her safe. This case just got urgent, and we were afraid the suspect would get away. We had no choice but to ask her.”

Connor nodded. “If you can handle things yourselves, then handle them. Only call her in if you have no other option. She needs a break too.”

Byrne’s heart skipped. He nodded quickly. “Yes, absolutely.”

He couldn’t help but wonder about Connor and Lydia’s relationship. There had to be something there.

“Where exactly did she go?” Connor asked.

If anyone else had asked, Byrne would’ve kept his mouth shut. But this was Connor.

“They’re headed toward the airport area, but I don’t know the exact spot.”

All he had to do was make that 3:30 flight, and he’d be gone, free to start over somewhere new.

He stood by the window, peering out, and what he saw nearly made his heart stop. Police cars, one after another, creeping closer, all with their lights and sirens off. They didn’t want to spook him.

He didn’t hesitate. He spun, grabbed his suitcase, and bolted out of the room.

Crap!

Who the hell leaked his location? He’d covered every base, thought of every detail. How did they find him so fast?

No time to figure it out. He ran for the stairs, raced to his car, and tore off toward the airport.

Back in the squad car, Lydia cocked an eyebrow and said calmly, “He’s onto us. Turn around. Head for the airport.”

The car made a quick U-turn and sped off into the city lights.
