Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 264

Kylie had no clue what went down that afternoon. She texted her daughter, but Lydia never wrote back. Figuring Lydia was just caught up with something, Kylie decided not to push.

So when Lydia finally called, she was caught off guard. “Garrett is back?”

“Yeah, he dropped by out of nowhere. Wanted to check in on you and your grandpa.”

Lydia paused, thinking it over. “I probably won’t be back for another hour. You all can start dinner first, don’t wait up for me.”

She still needed to swing by the police station.

“That’s fine,” Kylie said right away. “Do what you need to do. Garrett is planning to stop by the hospital to see your grandpa before coming home anyway.”

“Alright, see you later.”

After the call, Connor stepped closer, his eyes warm. “Tired?”

Lydia gave him a crooked smile. “Not really.” For her, the surgery wasn’t long, just took a lot of focus.

Connor frowned a little. “Why didn’t you tell me what happened today?”

If Mikey hadn’t texted, he’d still be in the dark about her being brought into the station, not to mention the part where she put herself on the line going toe-to-toe with those people. Did she even realize how dangerous that was?

Lydia let out a soft laugh. “It wasn’t a big deal. I had it under control.”

“Really? You hacked into the police system with the Fifth Division breathing down your neck, then helped arrest suspects. That’s your idea of having things under control? Do you know how worried I was?”

Connor genuinely thought Lydia was almost reckless.

Connor’s brows lifted. If he remembered right, Garrett helped her bring in that injured girl today. Did the siblings not even realize? If that was the case, he’d better keep quiet.

“You heading to the station now?” Connor asked, still a bit in awe of how capable Lydia was.

“Why don’t you go home first? I’ll swing by the station, then head back after.” She couldn’t have dinner with Connor tonight. She was expected at home with Garrett and her parents.

Connor felt a little let down. He’d hoped she’d invite him over for dinner with her family, but maybe he was just hoping for too much.

“It’s fine. I’ll go to the station with you, then head home after.”

Since he was set on it, Lydia just nodded.

She didn’t realize, while she’d been in surgery all afternoon, that her actions had shaken the whole city. The police had kept things quiet, so nobody outside the force knew that the Fifth Division wasn’t some pillar of justice. To most people, it looked like a regular part of the police, but in reality, it was a den of corrupted cops. Ordinary folks were fine as long as they didn’t cross the wrong people. But if they did, at best they suffered in silence, and at worst, they might never see the outside of the police station again.
