She would never forget that moment. All the soldiers crowded around him, crying and begging him to hang on. They couldn’t lose him. She rushed over to check his breathing and found it was still there, just barely. Without hesitating, she ordered the others to set up a simple operating table right there and started emergency treatment.
A steel nail was lodged in the back of his head. Lydia was so anxious she could hardly think straight, terrified that a single mistake would cost him his life. Luckily, she had a life-saving pill with her. She gave it to him, just to keep him going, and then called for a helicopter to rush him to the hospital. It was a close call, but they managed to save him.
He was too badly hurt to travel far, so he had to stay in a hospital in Southeast Asia to recover. Lydia still had her missions, so she had no choice but to leave. Later, she heard that Number One had survived, though it sounded like he’d never be able to return to field work. She’d felt a twinge of regret back then. She never knew that man was Connor. No wonder he’d been searching everywhere for Miracle Hands. With injuries as bad as his, no one could recover easily.
“Do you remember me?” Connor asked, noticing Lydia staring at him.
Lydia snapped back to reality. She stepped away and gave him a once-over, head to toe.
“You look better than I expected,” she said.
Connor took a step closer, his eyes gentle and full of feeling. “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. I’d have died far from home.”
He remembered it all, even if it was a blur. His eyes had been burned, and there was a steel nail in his skull. He honestly thought he was done for. Afterward, his team told him it was L who had saved him, but he’d had no way to find her. After that mission, L had disappeared. He’d always wished he could thank her, but at the same time, he was glad she was safe, hidden from anyone who might want to hurt her. He never imagined the girl in front of him now was L.
Maybe this really was fate.
“You were lucky. The nail missed your brain,” Lydia said.
He’d seen Connor at the airport earlier, but with all the noise and people, they hadn’t really crossed paths. But seriously, this late at night, and Connor was outside their house hugging some girl?
“Dad, Mom, that’s not Lucinda, is it?” Garrett’s frown deepened. He couldn’t see the girl’s face, but her figure and style didn’t look anything like Lucinda.
Kylie jumped in. “Garrett , that’s not Lucinda. That’s your sister, Lydia.”
Garrett froze.
Kylie went on, “I arranged the engagement with the Jefferson family when I was pregnant with your sister. Now that she’s back, the engagement is hers again. Besides, Connor isn’t into Lucinda. He’s only ever cared about your sister. Both families have agreed to it.”

The readers' comments on the novel: Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
