Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 298

It had to be Lydia.

Of course it was her. She must have known right from the start that she scored 750, the perfect score, but when Lucinda and her parents went outside, Lydia just kept quiet. It all made sense now. She didn’t want to go out with them because she was waiting to see Lucinda embarrass herself. And she probably called a bunch of reporters just to make it worse.

Seriously, how could someone be that petty?

Right then, Lucinda’s phone started ringing. She glanced at the screen. It was her homeroom teacher.

Her heart dropped. Suddenly, everything clicked in her mind. What if the reporters were here because of this?

Kylie saw Lucinda standing there, staring at her phone in shock. “Lucinda, your teacher’s calling. Aren’t you going to answer?”

Snapping out of it, Lucinda forced herself to pick up. “Hello, Mr. Marcus.”

His voice came through the phone, practically bubbling with excitement. “Lucinda, you’re amazing! So many top universities want you. Which one did you pick? And I called a few reporters to interview you, to get your name and our school out there. Don’t be nervous, just say whatever comes to mind, okay?”

Kylie was standing close enough to hear everything.

Lucinda felt her stomach twist with frustration. As if things weren’t already bad enough. Everyone in the class was congratulating her for being the top scorer. What was she supposed to do now? She’d never felt so awkward in her life.

“Mr. Marcus, there’s been a mistake,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “I’m not this year’s top scorer.”

Everyone was listening, so she had to explain.

There was a pause on the other end. “What? Lucinda, if it’s not you, then who is it? I saw all the university cars parked at your house.”

Kylie nodded. “Yes, she’s here. That’s why the universities came.”

Marcus finally realized he’d jumped to conclusions. “I really apologize. Everyone in the group chat kept congratulating Lucinda, and when she didn’t say anything, I just assumed it was true. That’s why I called the reporters.”

He made it sound like Lucinda should have corrected everyone sooner, and none of this would have happened.

Lucinda could barely hold back her frustration. Was he seriously blaming her for this?

“There were so many people at the house, I didn’t even have a chance to check my phone,” she said.

Kylie added quickly, “She hadn’t looked at her phone, so she didn’t know what was going on in the group chat. Mr. Marcus, could you please clear things up for everyone, so there aren’t any more misunderstandings?”
