“But, Mr. Smith, I’ve explained everything to them. They just refuse to leave,” Harry said, sounding desperate.
The partners had already caused a scene so many times. But what could Smith Corporation do? There was no money to pay them back. With production at a standstill, it was only a matter of time before the partners brought in a pack of reporters to air the company’s dirty laundry.
“I told you to figure it out. Just do something!” Jenson barked, frustration boiling over. He felt lightheaded from the stress.
“Yes, sir. I’ll try again,” Harry stammered before hanging up.
Jenson turned his glare on Sandy. “Sandy, we gave you thirty million in cash. The company needs money right now. Just give it back for now. We’ll return it as soon as we get an investor.”
Before her surgery, Sandy had asked Jenson and Milana for a bank card loaded with thirty million.
But that money was hers. She had nearly died for it. Handing it over again was out of the question. On top of that, she’d already spent a good chunk of it.
“That money is for my treatment. If you want it, you might as well be asking for my life,” she said flatly.
She had just donated a kidney. She was finally out of the hospital, but who knew what complications might show up later? There was no way she was letting go of her emergency fund.
Jenson’s anger flared. He barely noticed the pain in his jaw. “We just need to use it for a bit, just enough to calm down the partners. If they keep making trouble, Smith Corporation’s stock will crash even further.”
The stock price had already been tanking for half a month. Everything was in the red. Everyone was on edge.
“Come on. Your business deals are always worth tens of millions. My little bit of money won’t make a real difference. You should be out there finding investors, not trying to take my life-saving money. I’m still recovering and need my meds. Don’t even think about touching what I need to survive.”
At first, they thought their real daughter would be different, maybe even caring. But Sandy was just as cold. Maybe even colder. She wouldn’t give them a penny.
“Fine, don’t give us the money. When the company crashes, you won’t get a cent,” Milana spat.
Sandy just laughed. “Don’t you have a safe full of jewelry? Sell one necklace and you’ll have more than I do. Why are you hoarding all that stuff if you’re so desperate for cash?”
Milana had a whole safe packed with jewelry and gold. If the company was in such a crisis, why wasn’t she selling her own things? It was ridiculous to come after Sandy’s small stash.
Jenson’s eyes lit up. He slapped his thigh and turned to Milana. “Sandy’s right. You’ve got all that jewelry and gold. Get it out and sell it. Then we can pay off the partners.”

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
