Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 538

Chris just stared for a second, then exploded. “Leaking secrets? Are you kidding me? Our family has served this country for generations. When have we ever betrayed our nation?”

His dad had died young, all because of a mission for the country. And their ancestors? So many of them gave their lives too. Connor was forced to leave the army after getting hurt on a mission. Who would be heartless enough to smear the Jefferson family like this?

“So the person who reported is just scum, right?” Mikey asked.

“Absolutely,” Chris shot back.

Mikey raised an eyebrow. “Wasn’t your assignment today to block all signals around the State Council building?”

Chris froze. It felt like the bottom dropped out of his stomach. He went pale.

“So Connor was the one I blocked out?” he whispered.

Grandpa Samuel let out a snort. “What do you think? Good thing Lydia hacked into your system and tracked down Connor’s location. That’s the only reason we were able to act so fast. If she hadn’t, what do you think would’ve happened if something went wrong in there or if he was ambushed on his way back?”

Chris broke out in a cold sweat just thinking about it. Everything suddenly made too much sense.

“I…” He couldn’t even finish.

Connor cut in. “It’s fine, Grandpa. Chris didn’t know I was the one being summoned. And look, I’m all good. Besides, the kid’s got talent. The government wouldn’t have recruited him otherwise.”

When Chris was a kid, Grandpa wanted him to join the military too, but Connor said no. He wanted Chris to be free, to figure out his own path. No one expected him to become a top hacker, quietly making a name for himself and getting picked up by the state.

Chris pulled himself together, looking at Connor. “I’m sorry, Blake. I didn’t want to be useless, I just… I never thought I’d almost get you hurt again.”

“You didn’t do anything wrong. You were just following orders.”

Chris nodded so fast his head might fall off. “No, I believe you! I know you’ve got the skills. I’m just… I can’t believe how incredible you are.”

She really was on another level.

Lydia went on, “Based on what happened today, your department is probably connected to the people after Connor. Stay and watch for anything suspicious. Don’t worry, you won’t have to cross any lines. And honestly, no matter how many times they patch up their system, I can break in again.”

The network department had tried to recruit her before, but she hated being tied down. She liked doing things her way. Sure, she could help the country, but she could just as easily crack their defenses and scare the life out of them if she wanted. That was just who she was.

Chris wasn’t like that. He had a job, and he had to follow orders, even if it meant targeting Connor. If he didn’t, it would be seen as betraying the organization.

He listened to Lydia and realized she was right. No matter how good their defense systems were, to Hacker L, they were nothing.
