Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 625

A spark finally lit up in Luke’s eyes. He looked at Lydia, almost afraid to hope. “Do you… still see me as your brother?”

What Lydia didn’t know was that, ever since they were kids, Luke had always been curious about his older sister. He’d wanted to tag along behind her, to play and get close. But their parents always kept him away. And whenever he did see Lydia, she’d be so cold and distant he had no idea how to reach her.

After everything that happened today, it felt like his whole world had flipped upside down. Lydia wasn’t actually his sister, his dad wasn’t really his grandmother’s son, and his mom had teamed up with his real sister to hurt their grandma. The weight of it all pressed on his chest, so heavy he could barely breathe.

“As long as you want to be,” Lydia answered.

Luke nodded right away. “Of course I do!”

“Then what are you still doing up there?” Lydia raised an eyebrow and started toward him.

A new hope flickered in Luke’s chest. He grabbed the window frame to pull himself up, but his legs were numb from sitting too long. Without warning, his ankle cramped up, hard.

Lydia didn’t even have time to think. She rushed forward, calling, “Luke!”

But he was already falling, like a kite that had snapped free. She managed to brush the corner of his shirt with her fingertips, but that was it.

People gathered outside started screaming. Lydia’s heart dropped out of her chest. For a split second, all she could think was, what if Grandma wakes up and blames her for not looking after Luke?

“Hang on!”

A familiar, strained voice shouted from below.

Lydia immediately leaned out the window and saw someone had caught Luke just in time. It was Connor.

Everyone around just looked at each other. Was he seriously jealous of his own soon to be brother in law?

Luke let go awkwardly, dropping his arms and ducking his head. “Sorry, Lydia. I caused you a lot of trouble.”

Lydia nodded. “Now that you know, maybe try listening from now on. You’re a man. Stand up straight. No more of this dramatic life and death stuff.”

Luke nodded sheepishly. “I know. I swear, nothing like today will ever happen again.”

“Good.”

With Luke safe, the crowd finally started to scatter. Luke took a breath, then walked over to Connor, who still looked pretty annoyed. He bowed deeply. “Thank you for saving me.”
