Kevin pulled out an old USB drive, plugged it into the computer, and projected the screen onto the wall.
“Take your time with this,” he said, his pride obvious. He’d spent over a decade gathering these videos, keeping them safe all these years.
Garrett and the others leaned in, eyes fixed on the screen.
A little girl, maybe five years old, with her hair in a high ponytail, was shown stitching up an injured wild animal. Her face was so serious, her focus intense. She looked adorable, but there was this cool, almost distant vibe about her.
The video shifted. The same little girl was now in a lab, performing a dissection. Dissection is basic stuff in medicine, but seeing a five or six-year-old doing it? That was unreal. Everyone was stunned, even Garrett. He remembered meeting his first cadaver at ten, and he couldn’t even pick up the scalpel. It took him until twelve to finally go through with a dissection. Yet his sister had already mastered it as a little kid. That was just hard to wrap his head around.
As Lydia got older, the videos showed her doing all kinds of biological research in the lab. During school breaks, she traveled the world, using her medical skills to help people and rescue injured animals wherever she went.
There were so many videos on that drive. When the next one started, Kevin glanced at the group, who all looked like they’d just seen a ghost. “Now you’ll see how ten-year-old Lydia performed surgery on the head of state of Country E and actually saved his life.”
Back then, Kevin and the other old-timers had tried to talk Lydia out of it. She was supposed to be on vacation, out training and learning. Then she heard about the king of Country E, who was dying of cancer and willing to pay a fortune for help. Lydia was still young, didn’t have much money, and that offer was hard to resist. More than anything, she wanted to see if her years of studying had really paid off. She pored over the king’s medical files, prepared for three months, and finally pulled him back from the edge.
That was the moment Miracle Hands became a legend.
Because Lydia was so young, hardly anyone knew about her involvement. Kevin had been there in the operating room, helping her. Only the king and his closest family ever found out that Miracle Hands was just a ten-year-old girl. Over the years, her name became a myth, and countless powerful people tried to find her for treatment, but nobody ever succeeded.
Lydia was still so young, but her reputation in the medical world meant they all felt the need to show respect.
“It’s alright. I know things are serious this time, or Grandpa Kevin wouldn’t have called you all in.”
Wells nodded. “You are right, Miss Norwood. The virus is spreading too fast. We need to find a cure as soon as possible.”
Being called Miss Norwood over and over felt weird to Lydia. “There’s no need to be so formal. Just call me Lydia.”

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
