Chapter 518
XENOIS
“We’re going to figure this out, I said firmly. All of us together. We’ll research, we’ll plan, we’ll find a way to satisfy Janice’s debt without losing Lumina. And if we can’t find a way- I met Shawn’s eyes, then we fight. Cosmic entity or not, she wants to take our family member, she’s going to face resistance.”
“That could trigger the timeline reset, Thorne warned from his position by the door.
Then we make sure our resistance is measured enough not to cross that line,” I said. “We defend without attacking. We protect without threatening. We
show Janice that taking Lumina comes with complications she might not have anticipated.”
“That’s a very thin line to walk, my father observed.
“We’re Blackwoods,” my mother said. “We specialize in walking thin lines. It’s practically our family motto.”
“I thought our family motto was tactical innovation through controlled chaos,” Riley said, his tears stopping as he engaged with the practical
discussion.
That’s the unofficial motto,” my mother confirmed. “The official one is probably something about honor and tradition. But I like the chaos one better.”
Despite everything-despite cosmic debts and alternate timelines and the threat of losing Lumina-I felt myself smile. This was my family. Complicated,
powerful, absolutely insane, but mine.
“So what’s the plan?” Lake asked, pulling back from the group embrace but staying close to Lumina. “Do we tell Janice we’re not paying? Do we
negotiate? Do we portal her to somewhere really far away?”
“We finish with Jerome first, I said. “That’s the immediate threat. We execute the offensive operations, dismantle his coalition, eliminate him as a danger to our pack. Then I looked at Lumina, “-then we deal with Janice as a family.”
“Together,’ Ollie said firmly.
“Together, we all echoed.
The conversation shifted to more practical matters after that-what roles the children would play in the upcoming operations against Jerome, what
safety protocols needed to be in place, how we’d coordinate defenses if Jerome tried another attack before we could launch our offensive.
But underneath the tactical planning, I could see the fear in all their faces. The knowledge that something was coming we couldn’t fully prepare for That no matter how well we planned or how hard we fought, Janice had power we couldn’t match.
“Can I ask something? Shawn said as the meeting was winding down. About the other timeline?
“Of course, Lumino said.
because events
“Did I exist there? Shawn asked. Was I part of your family in that version of events?’
Lumina shook her head. ‘No. In that timeline, I never met you. Silvia and Samuel never adopted you because she hesitated, unfolded differently. They were dealing with their grief over losing Xena and Ollie. They werent in a position to take in another child.”
‘So me being here, being adopted, being part of this family-that’s all because you changed things. Shawn said slowly.

‘Yes, Lumina confirmed. “Everything changed when I came back. The entire trajectory of events shifted based on the knowledge I brought with me.”
‘Then I owe you my family, Shawn said simply. “My place here, my connection to everyone-that exists because you died and came back and changed everything. If Janice thinks she’s taking you without a fight, she’s wrong. You gave me a family. I’m not letting some cosmic entity take you away.”
