Chapter 519
“We all protect each other,” I said. “That’s what family means. And right now, protecting Lumina means being smart about how we face Janice. Not
rushing in with plasma blasts or portal escapes, but actually thinking through what we’re dealing with.”
“But if thinking doesn’t work? Lake asked.
“Then we improvise,” I said. “Like we always do. Like we did yesterday at the school. We adapt, we use our abilities creatively, we refuse to give up.”
“Controlled chaos,” Riley said, almost smiling. “The Blackwood way.”
“The Blackwood way, I agreed.
We spent another hour talking through contingencies, addressing fears, making sure everyone understood both the threat and our approach to handling it. By the time the children were dismissed to return to their regular activities-which today included staying home from school while we assessed security- I felt marginally better about having had this conversation.
They knew the truth now. Knew what we were facing. Knew that their mother had died once before to save them and might be asked to sacrifice
something again.
And they’d all, in their own ways, pledged to fight against that outcome.
“That went better than I expected,” Lumina said once we were alone with my parents and Thorne.
“They’re resilient,” my mother observed. “Especially Riley. Though I’m concerned about the guilt he’s carrying.”
“We’ll keep working on that,” I said. “Make sure he understands none of this was his fault.”
“And Shawn’s determination to vaporize a necromancer? Thorne asked wryly.
“Is both touching and terrifying,” I admitted. “But at least he’s committed to protecting the family.”
“They all are, my father said. “Which will either save us or get us all killed. Possibly both.”
“The Blackwood way, my mother repeated with dark humor.
We reviewed operational plans for the Jerome offensive, coordinated timing with allied packs, verified that all strike teams were in position. Within forty-eight hours, we’d launch simultaneous attacks across multiple territories-the beginning of the end for Jerome’s coalition.
And after that, whatever camne with Janice.
I looked at Lumina, seeing the exhaustion on her face, the weight she was carrying. She’d died once already in another timeline Had come back to save
us all. Had broken cosmic promises and changed fate itself to give our family a second chance.
And now that second chance was threatened by the very entity whod made it possible.
“We’ll find a way, I promised her. “Somehow, we’ll find a way to satisfy the debt without losing you
“Maybe, Lumina said. ‘Or maybe we won’t. But either way, we tried. We built something good here. Something worth fighting for

“Something worth dying for?” I challenged.
“Something worth living for, she corrected. “That’s why I came back. Not to die heroically saving everyone, but to live. To give all of us the chance to
actually live instead of just surviving.”
She was right. That’s what this second chance had been about-not just preventing deaths but enabling life. Real, full, messy, complicated life.
“Then that’s what we focus on, I decided. “Living fully, loving completely, making every moment count. And when Janice comes to collect-we face her
together, as a family, and we don’t give up without a fight.”
“Together, Lumina agreed.
“Together, my parents and Thorne echoed.
The Blackwood way.
