Chapter 299
AUTHOR’S POV
He rose instantly, taking one careful step toward her like he was approaching a wounded animal. “You recognize u47”
Violet frowned, confusion gathering between her brows. “Yeah of course I do. Why wouldn’t 12”
Lucian’s jaw flexed.
“Because you woke up a couple of hours ago,” he said quietly, and you were screaming. You asked who we were.”
“Huh?” Violet stared at him. “1… I don’t remember that,”
“It’s fine,” he murmured, his voice dropping, softening, “How do you feel?”
She swallowed, shifting slightly. “Pain.”
Ace let out a low whistle. “Is this the first time you’re getting shot?”
Violet turned her head just enough to give him the most deadpan, exhausted “what do you think?” look.
Lucian shot Ace a glare sharp enough to slice him open.
Ace raised his hands. “Alright, alright. My bad.”
Lucian shook his head. Then looked back at Violet, softer again.
“You shouldn’t mind him. Do you feel okay to talk?”
Violet pressed her fingers lightly against her temple. “My head hurts… but yes. I can talk.”
Lucian exhaled like he’d been holding his breath. “Okay. What do you know?”
Violet’s face tightened, eyes clouding. Her voice trembled slightly.
“I don’t know who this person is… but my mom told me in the past that this person is involved in what happened to the Stormvale family.” She swallowed. “When she called me that day… she sounded scared. Hysterical. She was mumbling about a safe. A bank safe. And a library… a librarian… I don’t even know. Before she could say anything that made sense, the call disconnected.”
Lucian’s brows pulled together, expression darkening.
Violet continued, voice cracking.
“When I rushed back home… she had been murdered.” Her lip trembled. “After the funeral… I noticed strange men following me. So I went into hiding. And I haven’t been able to get whatever she was talking about.”
Her hands were shaking violently by the time she finished. She pressed them into her thighs as if trying to anchor herself.
Lucian stepped closer, slow and cautious, he spoke in a low yet grounding tone.
“This is a good start,” he told her gently. “Calm down.”
She tried. But her shoulders kept trembling.
He continued softly, “We’re going to find answers. The first thing we have to do is go to the bank and access your mother’s safe.”
He paused, voice steady but warm.
“Do you know where the bank is? Do you know where your mom banked?”
Violet nodded quickly, anxious. “Yes. I know where she banked. But I can’t go there. People are trying to kill me. They’ll kill me. I’m scared.”
Lucian’s expression shifted into one of quiet, fierce protectiveness, it rose like a storm behind his eyes.
“Calm down,” he murmured, stepping closer. “I’m here.”
Her breath hitched.
“Focus on recovering first,” he continued, voice deep and sure. “Then we’ll go to the bank and get whatever evidence she left. And nothing is going to happen to you.”
Her shaking didn’t stop.
Not until Lucian reached out, slowly at first, giving her time to flinch if she wanted to, but when she didn’t, he gently pulled her into his chest.
Violet stiffened for half a second, then collapsed against him like a dam breaking. A shuddering breath escaped her as she buried her face in his shirt, her fingers gripping weakly at the fabric while the fear trembled out of her.
Lucian wrapped an arm around her, steady, warm and protective in a way he rarely allowed himself to be. His jaw rested lightly against the top of her head as he murmured something calming under his breath.
Ace’s brows shot up almost to his hairline.
He stared at his boss….this was man he’d known for years, holding this girl as if she was made of glass and fire at the same time.
He didn’t comment.
But damn, he noticed.
He leaned back against the wall, arms folded, watching quietly, the smirk replaced by something more thoughtful. Calculating. Curious.
The only other person he had seen Lucian hold like that-
was Alina.
And Violet probably had no idea.
Lucian kept one hand on the back of Violet’s head, fingers gentle, thumb brushing a soothing circle against her hairline. His voice stayed low and steady.
“You’re safe,” he murmured again. “I’ve got you.”
Violet’s breaths softened gradually, the tremors in her shoulders casing as the fear bled out of her. Her fingers loosened slightly in his shirt but didn’t let go entirely.
Ace exhaled quietly, shaking his head with amusement he didn’t dare voice.
Lucian didn’t look at him. Didn’t care to.
His attention was entirely on the fragile girl trembling against him.
And Ace… kept watching silently.
Waiting.
Noticing every detail.
Because this….this connection, was becoming impossible to ignore.
Violet’s trembling eventually softened into slow, uneven breaths against Lucian’s chest. Her fingers, once clenched in a desperate grip, loosened until only the tips brushed lightly against his shirt.
It wasn’t long before the adrenaline drained from her completely, leaving exhaustion in its place.
Her breathing steadied.
Her body grew heavier.
And Lucian felt the moment she drifted back into sleep.
Slowly and carefully, he eased his arm from around her, supporting her head so it never jerked or fell. He lowered her back onto the pillow with a gentleness that felt out of place in a life like his.
His palm lingered for a second longer than necessary, thumb brushing a stray strand of hair from her cheek.
Her face, relaxed now, looked even younger.
Even more breakable.
He stared at her for several seconds, longer than he should have, longer than he would ever admit…something unreadable flickering in his eyes. Something he tried to wrestle back into the shadows.
Finally, he straightened and nodded once toward Ace, a silent signal.
They stepped out of the room, closing the door quietly behind them.
The living room was dim, a warm contrast to the tense, sterile atmosphere of the room they’d left. Ace stretched once, rolling his shoulders. He opened his mouth, ready to speak-
Then closed it again.
Lucian’s brows drew together immediately. “Out with it already.”
Ace hesitated only a beat before sighing, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Boss… I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be rude, but… do you possibly feel something for Violet?”
Lucian’s head snapped toward him so fast Ace almost flinched.
“Are you out of your mind?” Lucian shot back. “Of course not.”
Ace lifted both hands, palms up. “Because, boss… I know you. You’re cold, stern, strict. I’ve never seen you with anybody like that except Alina.” His eyes narrowed with curiosity. “What’s going on?”
Lucian’s jaw tightened.
“Nothing.”
Ace didn’t believe him. That much was obvious.
And Lucian knew he didn’t believe him.
Silence stretched for several seconds.
Then Lucian exhaled slowly, gaze drifting toward the closed door behind them.
“There’s just… something about her,” he admitted quietly. “Something about her that screams for me to protect her.”
Ace’s expression softened with interest.
“Is it because she has the same eyes as Alina? Because I noticed.”
