The highly anticipated day of the announcement ceremony had finally dawned, and from the moment Alina’s eyelids fluttered open, her morning was engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos.
It all kicked off when a maid, moving with the quiet grace of a shadow, slipped into her room, intent on rousing her for breakfast. Alina squinted at the alarm clock perched on her bedside table, her vision still shrouded in the remnants of sleep. Six a.m. stared back at her, a cruel reminder of the early hour.
“Breakfast at this hour?” she mumbled, her voice thick and raspy, still laced with the heaviness of sleep. “Isn’t it a bit too early for that?”
The maid clasped her hands together in a gesture of respect. “Yes, my lady, it is indeed earlier than usual. However, your mother has requested that everyone start their day ahead of schedule due to the event scheduled for this evening.”
Alina let out a groan, pulling the blankets up to her chin in a desperate attempt to shield herself from the demands of the day. “Why me?” she whispered dramatically, the weight of her reluctance palpable. With a resigned sigh, she conceded, “Fine. I’ll be down in a bit.”
As soon as the maid exited, Alina made no effort to rise. Instead, she flopped back onto the bed, curling under the duvet, surrendering to the comforting warmth, mere seconds away from slipping back into slumber.
But her reprieve was short-lived.
Without warning, a hand grabbed her shoulder and shook her with an urgency that felt as if her very soul was being summoned from her body.
“Wake up, princess!”
It was Talia.
Not content with mere shaking, Talia was practically bouncing on the bed, radiating the chaotic energy of a toddler who had just consumed an entire bag of candy.
“Today is the day you are revealed to the world as the long-lost daughter of the Evergreens! The long-lost heiress of the Evergreen family!”
Alina buried her face into her pillow, muffling her groan. “Stop…”
“You’re lucky it’s me waking you,” Talia chimed, leaning down to flash her a wide grin. “The next person to come in here will be your mother… and she specifically told me to remind you that you won’t enjoy the method she’ll use to wake you.”
Talia shuddered dramatically, her eyes wide with mock horror. “By the way, your mom can be quite terrifying when she wants things to go her way.”
Finally, Alina sat up, her hair a wild halo around her head, eyes still half-closed in a daze. “Why are we doing this again?”
“Because you agreed to it, remember?” Talia sang, her voice light and teasing.
“I’m starting to regret that agreement,” Alina admitted, rubbing her face in an attempt to shake off the fog of sleep.
