The journey to their new destination unfolded in a tranquil silence, the kind that envelops you like a soft blanket. Each passenger was ensconced in their own thoughts, the atmosphere devoid of any palpable tension, creating a bubble of calm in the vehicle.

As the car decelerated, coming to a halt, Lucian cast a glance out the passenger-side window. His brow furrowed almost immediately. The entrance of a bar loomed ahead, its neon lights flickering with an almost garish intensity, promising an experience that was anything but subtle.

The bass of music thumped rhythmically, vibrating through the glass, while clusters of people congregated outside, their laughter ringing out too loud, their conversations overlapping in a chaotic symphony. Some among them swayed unsteadily, clearly under the influence of too many drinks.

Lucian exhaled sharply through his nose, a mix of disbelief and irritation brewing within him.

Turning his head, he directed his gaze toward Ace, who sat in the driver’s seat, a grin plastered across his face.

“Isn’t it a bit too early for us to be stopping for a drink?” he questioned, skepticism dripping from his words.

Ace chuckled lightly as he switched off the engine, his demeanor carefree.

“We’re not here for a drink,” he replied, his tone playful yet reassuring.

Lucian’s eyes flicked back to the bar, then returned to Ace, disbelief etched across his features.

“This,” he stated flatly, “is where the new safe house is?”

With a confident nod, Ace opened his door and stepped out, his grin unwavering.

“Yep.”

Lucian followed suit, his gaze still locked onto the building, clearly unimpressed by the choice of location.

“At a bar,” he muttered under his breath, the words laced with incredulity.

Before Ace could muster a response, Violet emerged from the car, pressing herself closer to Lucian’s side. Her fingers curled tightly into the fabric of his shirt, a silent plea for comfort. The hood of her sweatshirt was pulled low, nearly obscuring her face.

In an instant, Lucian sensed her fear radiating off her. It was a palpable thing, heavy and suffocating. He instinctively wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close and offering a reassuring squeeze. His eyes searched her face for any sign of distress.

“You okay?” he asked softly, his voice low and steady.

She nodded, though her gaze remained cast downward, avoiding his.

“I’m fine,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lucian chose not to press further. He simply stayed close, a protective presence beside her.

Ace gestured for them to follow, and Lucian guided Violet forward, positioning himself slightly ahead of her as they stepped into the bar’s chaotic interior.

The noise enveloped them instantly.

The music blasted from speakers mounted high on the walls, drowning out coherent thought. Tables were packed with patrons, glasses clinking in a celebratory rhythm, voices overlapping in a cacophony of laughter and drunken chatter. It felt as if the place had been in full swing for hours, despite the mid-afternoon sun still shining outside.

Lucian’s expression hardened, a scowl forming on his lips.

Leaning slightly toward Ace as they navigated through the crowd, he voiced his discomfort.

“I don’t like this place. It’s barely noon, and people are already plastered.”

Ace didn’t slow his pace, his expression serious.

“Be patient, boss,” he replied, his tone lacking any trace of amusement.

They maneuvered through the throngs of people, Lucian keeping Violet tucked close to his side. Her grip tightened around his arm every time someone brushed past them, a clear indication of her unease.

Then it happened.

A man staggered toward them, drink in hand, his eyes glazed and unfocused. When his gaze landed on Violet, his lips curled into a drunken grin.

“Well hello there, pretty lady—”

Violet pressed herself against Lucian as if hoping to meld into him, her body trembling in fear, her mind spiraling back to a haunting memory she fought desperately to escape.

Lucian halted, his glare directed at the man sharp enough to cut through the noise of the bar.

“Fuck off,” he growled, his voice low and menacing.

The man froze, his grin vanishing as he muttered something unintelligible before stumbling away, clearly intimidated.

Violet shivered at Lucian’s tone, and he noticed immediately, concern flooding his features.

“Are you cold?” he asked gently, his voice dropping to a whisper.

She shook her head, though it was not the chill of the air that made her tremble; it was the fear that gripped her heart. But she wouldn’t tell him that. She didn’t want him to think she was afraid of him.

“No,” she replied, her voice steady, but her eyes averted.

Lucian didn’t press the matter further. Instead, he shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders, pulling it snugly around her.

“Just wear it,” he insisted softly.

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded in acceptance.

“Okay… thank you,” she said, a small smile breaking through her anxiety.

They continued after Ace, who was leading them toward a narrow hallway at the back of the bar. With each step they took, the noise began to fade. The music dulled, the laughter and drunken chatter receded into the background, and a sense of relief washed over Lucian.

He could feel the tension in his shoulders easing, and he noticed Violet visibly relaxing as well.

Something must have happened to her, he thought, because there was no way someone could be this terrified of a bar. But he decided against asking her about it right now; he sensed that it wasn’t the time.

The hallway twisted and turned, leading them deeper into the establishment, and with each passing moment, the sounds of revelry faded further away.
