The car rolled to a slow stop in front of the library, its tires crunching softly against gravel that looked like it hadn’t been disturbed in years.
Violet was the first to notice it,how quiet everything felt.
It was so quiet that one would think that it was deserted.
Her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag as she stared at the building through the windshield. In pictures, it looked old. Quaint, even. But seeing it in person, it looked… forgotten. Lake time itself had taken one look at the place and decided it wasn’t worth coming back to.
Her knee bounced uncontrollably.
Lucian cut the engine and turned slightly in his seat, already sensing the shift in her breathing. Ace caught it too, his gaze flicking to her trembling hands.
“Hey,” Violet said suddenly, her voice shaky. “What if… what if we don’t find anything?”
Lucian didn’t answer right away, giving her space to speak, to unravel.
“What if it’s not here?” she went on, the words tumbling over each other. “What if we’ve been wrong this whole time? What if at the end of the day… it’s not this library?”
Her legs were visibly shaking now as she pushed the door open, standing but not moving away from the car.
Lucian stepped out and rounded the hood, stopping in front of her. He didn’t touch her,not yet, but his presence was grounding, and Violet found herself calming down a bit…just a bit
“It is,” he said firmly.
Violet swallowed. “You don’t know that.”
“I do,” Lucian replied without hesitation. “It’s the library. It has to be.”
Ace leaned against the car, arms crossed, eyes scanning the street out of habit. But his voice was steady when he spoke Your mom was smart, Vi. Scary smart,”
Lucian nodded. “Smart enough to hide something in plain sight, he added. “Somewhere no one would think to look twice. Somewhere old. Boring, Overlooked.”
Violet’s lips trembled. “But what if-”
Lucian stepped closer then, lowering his voice so it felt like it was meant only for her. “Violet,” he said gently but firmly “Calm down.”
She looked up at him. eyes glossy.
“We are going to find it,” he continued. “And we are going to bring the man responsible for your mother’s death to justice
Her breath hitched, She had almost forgotten that the same manas responsible for her mother’s death too. “Because finding him isn’t just about me but you too and making sure you get your justice. Fucian Buished query
Something in his certainty, made something unwavering ding gene settled into her chest. Not completely. But cough

Ace pushed off the car. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s see what this place is hiding.”
They walked toward the entrance together.

Up close, the library looked even worse than the photos. The bricks were cracked, ivy crawling up one side like it was trying to swallow the building whole. The sign above the door was faded, some of the letters barely legible.
Violet hesitated again before pushing the door open.
The hinges groaned in protest.
Inside, the air smelled like dust and old paper. The lights flickered weakly overhead. The front counter was empty, no librarian in sight, there was no bell either, nothing. A few loose papers skittered across the floor as a draft swept through the room, making the place feel almost abandoned.

Ace frowned. “This place looks like it should’ve been condemned years ago.”
Lucian’s gaze was sharp, already cataloging exits, corners, shadows. “That’s why it’s perfect.”
They stepped farther in.
“Hello?” Violet called softly.
No answer.
From somewhere in the back, footsteps approached…slow and lazy. A door creaked open, and a young girl stepped out, chewing gum loudly.
She couldn’t have been more than twenty.
Her eyes landed on Lucian first.
Then Ace.
Her chewing slowed. Her gaze dragged deliberately over them, lingering. She straightened, tugged subtly at her top so her cleavage showed more, then ran a hand through her hair like she was on autopilot.
She strolled over to the counter, gum popping.
“Well,” she drawled, flashing a grin. “Hey, handsome. What can I do for you today?”
The exact same expression appeared on Lucian and Ace’s faces.
Annoyance.
Lucian didn’t return the smile. “We’re here to check for a library member.”
The girl kept chewing, clearly unimpressed. “Yeah?” she said. “Who are you looking for?”
Violet stepped forward before either man could speak. “Ruby,” she said. “Ruby Gail.”
The girl rolled her eyes, visibly annoyed that Violet was the one answering, and turned to the ancient computer behind the desk. The thing looked like it belonged in a museum.
She clicked the mouse with exaggerated slowness, gum snapping as she typed.
After a moment, she shrugged. “There’s nobody like that here.”
Violet’s heart dropped. “Are you sure?” she asked quickly. “Please check again. Check again..she…she has to be here.

The girl didn’t even touch the keyboard this time. She just rolled her eyes harder. “I said there’s nobody like that here. Why don’t you understand?“–
Lucian’s patience snapped.
He slammed his hand down on the counter with a loud bang.
The girl jumped, startled.
“You’re beginning to piss me off,” Ace said coldly. “If she asks you to check again, then fucking check again.”
His tone was dangerous….low, sharp and unyielding.
The girl swallowed hard. “Y–yes, sir,” she stuttered, fingers flying back to the keyboard. The earlier flirtation vanished, replaced by visible fear as she typed, shoulders tense.
After another minute, she glanced up nervously. “I…I promise you. There’s nobody like that here.”
Ace leaned closer to Lucian and murmured, “Let’s check around.
Lucian nodded once.
