Christine's expression grew darker and darker.
She looked at Howard, then at the whispering crowd below, before grinding out through clenched teeth, "You're absolutely right, Mr. Patton. Then we'll investigate first, judge later, and keep judging for three days if necessary." She let out a cold laugh. "The Pattons govern the people of this island, and I acknowledge that. What about outsiders, then?"
She waved her hand.
Two black-clothed guards carried a stretcher onto the platform, and someone lay on top of it.
The man was covered in blood, his clothes torn to shreds, his face barely recognizable, but from his build and the visible half of his face, Noelle recognized him instantly.
Jasper.
Noelle's breathing abruptly stopped.
Lucas froze too, veins bulging violently on the hand hanging at his side.
Jasper was placed in the center of the wooden platform, lying flat on his back. His face was pale as paper, his lips completely bloodless, and only the faint rise and fall of his chest proved he was still alive.
A deep knife wound cut across his left arm. The blood had already clotted, forming thick, dark-red crusts.
Several more injuries covered his body: knife wounds and blunt-force injuries, some old, some fresh. The sight was horrifying.
Christine walked to the stretcher and looked down at Jasper, her voice cold as frozen steel. "This man is an outsider. Does he have island registration? No. Does he have an identity here? No. He illegally snuck onto the island and infiltrated the Guard Department of the Nightfall Circle with bad intentions. He isn't one of the island's people, so the Pattons have no authority over him, correct?"
Howard's expression changed.
He opened his mouth like he wanted to speak, but Christine gave him no chance.
She bent down, picked up a knife beside the stretcher, and lifted it. The blade glinted coldly beneath the morning light.
Using the flat of the blade, she slapped Jasper's face again and again. The smacks echoed sharply through the square.
"Noelle, I know you're here." Christine's voice wasn't loud, but every corner of the square heard it clearly. "Look closely. Watch your brother bleed."
She raised the knife and sliced across Jasper's arm.
Blood instantly poured out, streaming down his arm before dripping onto the wooden platform, drop by drop. Soon, a small pool formed beneath him.
Jasper's body twitched violently, but he didn't cry out.
He gritted his teeth so hard that the muscles in his jaw trembled, his brows twisted tightly together, while cold sweat soaked his forehead.
Christine cut him again.
