Rebirth: She Cuts Ties and Takes Revenge (Noelle Kain) novel Chapter 574

"I'll rescue him myself. I don't need your help!"

After saying that, she turned to leave.

But the man suddenly reached out and grabbed her wrist.

The grip wasn't forceful, but it was tight, tight like he was afraid she'd disappear the very next second.

Noelle lowered her head and looked at that hand. The knuckles were sharp, the fingers long, the palm rough with calluses. Just like Sebastian's.

Her heartbeat skipped.

"Screw you!"

Lucas somehow produced a huge wooden club from nowhere and swung it hard at the man's head.

The club was as thick as an arm and cut through the air with a heavy whoosh. Even the air seemed to tremble as it came crashing down.

The man didn't even turn his head. He shifted sideways slightly, and the club barely missed his ear before slamming into the ground with a loud bang, kicking up dirt everywhere.

Lucas grinned smugly and pulled another wooden club from behind his back with his other hand. "Didn't expect that, huh? I've got another one!"

Before the man could fully steady himself, the second strike already came down.

This blow landed squarely on the back of his head with a dull thud.

His body swayed. His eyes widened briefly, as if he wanted to turn around and see something, then slowly closed.

He collapsed to the ground without moving.

Lucas tossed aside the club, clapped the dust off his hands, and spat toward the man on the ground. "Who the hell does he think he is, trying to stop us? Honestly, I don't think he's a good guy either. We don't even know him, so why is he helping us so much? Who knows what he's really after?"

He turned toward Noelle. "Noey, let's go save him."

Noelle didn't move.

She stood there staring down at the man on the ground.

He lay on his side facing her. Under the moonlight, that pockmarked face somehow looked even uglier than before, but with his eyes closed and that sharp gaze gone, he suddenly didn't feel nearly as irritating.

She crouched down and slowly reached out, her fingertips lightly touching his face.

Lucas froze. "Noey... what are you doing?"

Noelle ignored him.

Her fingers traced slowly along the line of his jaw, moving upward to behind his ears and across his cheekbones, searching little by little like she was looking for something.

She was searching for the edge of a mask, for signs of disguise, for any proof that this face wasn't real.

But there was nothing.

Beneath the skin was bone. Beneath the bone was muscle. Beneath the muscle were blood vessels. Beneath the blood vessels was a pulse.

Everything was real. The warmth, texture, and roughness all felt real.

This face was real. Those pockmarks were real. This man wasn't Sebastian.
