Chapter 549 The Tournament

Every student in the stadium felt their breath catch.

Even the great houses of Orroux couldn’t hide their excitement. Everyone wanted that prize.

Steven let out a small laugh. Orroux had really gone all out on this one.

But since he was here, he had no intention of letting anyone else walk away with it.

Robby smiled and continued. “That covers the rules and the rewards.”

“Next, please welcome Director Hudson Toot of the Inspectorate to say a few words.”

Thunderous applause rolled through the stadium.

The next instant, Hudson flickered into view at the center of the arena, a warm smile already on his face.

“Greetings, chosen sons and daughters of Draconia. Today marks the opening of Orroux’s Awakened Tournament.

“Every one of you represents the future of Orroux, the future of Draconia itself…”

More of the same formal speech followed.

Naturally, it had to be said, since the military was co-sponsoring this tournament alongside the academy.

He spoke for roughly ten minutes.

Once the pleasantries wrapped up, Hudson smiled.

“That’s enough from me. But there’s one point worth stressing above all else.

“Anyone who performs exceptionally well has a real shot at being fast tracked into the military, with a rank as high as colonel or brigadier general offered on the spot!

“Give it everything you’ve got!”

That announcement stirred up another wave through the crowd.

For competitors from more modest backgrounds, a direct path into the military at a moment like this counted as a genuine stroke of fortune.

After all, they’d already reached Three-Sigil, and graduation wasn’t far off.

Hudson made his way back to his seat in the stands.

Robby smiled. “Now, please welcome the principal, Ian Campbell, to officially open the tournament!”

Ian stood atop the raised platform, his lips barely moving as his voice thundered across the

arena.

“All competitors, take your positions! Orroux’s 88th Awakened Tournament is now officially underway!”

Fireworks burst overhead.

Every competitor surged forward toward the central arena.

Over a thousand of them, all told.

Fiona and Bianca stood at Steven’s side..

Steven leaned in close and murmured, “Stay sharp out there. If you run into that man, do not let him touch you. Not even by accident.”

Both women nodded, dead serious.

Steven cast a glance toward Griffin’s position. By the time this tournament ended, he wouldn’t be surprised if half the thousand competitors here had been infected through contact with that

man.

There was nothing he could do to stop it now. All he could do was wait until this was over, then dig into that strange power himself and search for a way to purge it entirely.

A few Orroux students spotted Steven stepping into the arena.

Their faces fell instantly. What is he doing up here?

There’s no point competing now.

One student raised a hand and called out, “Sir, is he actually allowed to compete? Are we certain he’s under 25? I have my doubts.”

The moment those words left his mouth, every eye in the stadium locked onto Steven.

What he’d pulled off at Orroux Academy a few days earlier had been shocking enough on its
