Chapter 116 Start Preparing
“Someone from the central shelter came here?” Leonel asked. “They want the Karthmoor sheiter’s people?”
“Yeah.” Scott sighed. “Back when everyone was desperate to get into the central shelter, they refused to take anyone. Now they suddenly want us to hand over our people. From what I’ve heard, the extreme cold devastated them. Nearly five million people died, most of them elderly, sick, disabled, or otherwise vulnerable. Millions more are barely hanging on and could die at any time. Altogether, the central shelter has lost more than ten million people. That’s why they suddenly remembered Karthmoor shelter and decided to use our population to replace the people they lost.”
Leonel chuckled. “The other shelters probably aren’t doing much better. Otherwise, the central shelter wouldn’t be so desperate to get its hands on Karthmoor’s population.”
Beckett frowned before letting out a heavy sigh. “How many people are even left in the country?”
Autumn, who had remained silent until then, finally spoke. “Even by a conservative estimate, the national population has probably fallen below 500 million. After three waves of disasters, more than half the country is gone. And that’s the optimistic estimate. Realistically, the number may be closer to 300 million.”
Beckett drew in a sharp breath.
He trusted Autumn completely, and deep down, he believed her estimate was probably accurate.
“What are we supposed to do now?” Scott sighed.
“There’s no miracle solution. We handle each crisis as it comes and fight to survive,” Autumn said casually. “Every disaster weeds out more people. Those who adapt survive. Those who don’t are wiped out.”
“The elderly dying is tragic, but if the children die too, humanity loses its future,” Beckett said, his thoughts turning to the years ahead. “The survivors may all be young and strong, but none of them will want to have children if this continues. Humanity could disappear within a few generations.”
“That’s why we need to save as many people in Karthmoor as possible and give them a chance to have families and rebuild,” Leonel said. “Even if the rest of the world becomes uninhabitable, Karthmoor has to remain capable of supporting future generations.”
“Well said!” Scott looked genuinely impressed. “You’re both so young, yet you’re already thinking about the bigger picture. I truly admire that.”
The three men traded another round of compliments before finally returning to the real issue.
“I can provide the technical knowledge needed to quickly produce chemicals that repel these mutated animals and plants, but we’ll need a production line,” Leonel said. “Making everything by hand would take far too long. The same goes for the disinfectants and other supplies we’ll need when the plague arrives.”
“I can provide the manpower,” Beckett said. “If you trust me, Mr. Marsh, we can build the production line at my camp.”
“How could I ask you to provide both the workers and the site? What kind of man would that make me?” Scott rejected the suggestion immediately. “We should build the workshop here. I can provide plenty of workers as well. Your people are highly trained, so they should remain where their skills can be put to After use”
Beckett and Leonel exchanged amused smiles.
