Chapter 124 Taking Over
Autumn gave him a thumbs-up. “Skilled people really are priceless. Now we won’t have to send so many people out on patrol.”
“Exactly. We’re already short-handed, and every person matters,” Leonel said. “Did you get those refugees settled?”
“Yeah.” Autumn tilted her head. “Leonel, I’ve got a bad feeling about this. The central shelter has caused trouble for Karthmoor over and over again. Those refugees were probably just testing us. I think the real trouble is still coming.”
Amusement flickered in Leonel’s eyes. “Great minds think alike. I was thinking the same thing. That’s why I pushed them to finish the drones as quickly as possible. This way, we can monitor the entire area without leaving any blind spots.”
“The central shelter is getting more shameless by the day,” Autumn said contemptuously. “They don’t even bother hiding what they’re doing anymore.”
“That’s what happens when people think they’re untouchable,” Leonel said with a smile. “But we’re not exactly easy targets either.”
Autumn handed the controller back to him. “Get ready for a fight. The central shelter is planning something. They’ve been pulling young, able-bodied people from every nearby shelter they can get their hands on. Those people will do anything for power. I don’t care how eager they are to get themselves killed, but if they bring the fight to our doorstep, we can’t let them win.”
“Of course.” Leonel nodded solemnly. “This is our home.”
Autumn yawned and started walking away, but she had only taken a few steps when Leonel called after her.
“Yeah?” She turned and looked at him in confusion.
“Catch.” Leonel tossed something her way, and she caught it.
It was an incredibly fresh apple.
He had clearly gone to a lot of trouble to preserve it.
“Get some rest,” Leonel said, offering no explanation.
“Thanks.” Autumn didn’t ask any questions.
She munched on the apple as she headed home. When she arrived, she found David diligently washing sheets and curtains by hand.
“Why are you washing those by hand? Didn’t I stockpile plenty of washing machines?” Autumn sat down
beside him.
“They’re not ours.” David’s ears turned suspiciously red as he stammered, “I’ve got nothing else to do anyway. I might as well keep busy.”
Autumn stopped eating and leaned closer to study him. “Are you seeing someone?”
“Kock it off. Why are you so nosy?” David snapped, clearly embarrassed. “Don’t be ridiculous. I’m too old to be dating anyone.”
“Thirty-seven isn’t old,” Autumn replied. “Alright, alright. Whatever makes you happy. Just don’t let anyone scam you again.”
