Chapter 125 Why Asher?
“Karthmoor shelter is the result of everything you’ve worked for,” Leonel said. “You don’t want someone else swooping in and taking credit for what you built, do you? Our territory is small. We only have a few hills to defend. But the shelter has millions of people.”
Beckett added, “Mr. Wright is right. Mr. Marsh, it’s time to decide.”
“Don’t worry.” Scott finally made up his mind. “Whatever happens, I’ll face it on my own terms. It’s time to settle this once and for all. As long as the two of you stay out of Karthmoor shelter’s internal affairs, I promise I’ll give you both an answer you’ll be satisfied with.”
Beckett and Leonel exchanged a glance, then smiled and answered together, “Of course.”
As soon as Scott returned to the shelter, his men reported that the two officials above him were preparing to leave with their families.
They claimed they were going to the central shelter to visit relatives.
Scott sneered. “Visit relatives, my ass. They betrayed me, and now they think they can walk away without consequences? Not a chance.”
He immediately gave the order. “Intercept them on the road. I don’t want a single one of them left alive. If they’re going to die, they’ll die inside Karthmoor.”
“What? But…” His men exchanged uneasy looks. “Isn’t that a little extreme? They used to be…”
“I was too lenient before, and that gave them the chance to stab me in the back. I won’t make the same mistake twice.” Scott’s tone left no room for argument. “I’ve already spoken with Beckett and Leonel. They won’t interfere. Use whatever it takes to eliminate the traitors.”
“Yes, sir!”
Even after the Karthmoor shelter identified the traitors, thousands of refugees were still closing in on the city.
Beckett, Leonel, and the head of the shelter’s security forces met to establish defensive lines and divide the surrounding territory among themselves.
All three groups would help repel the refugees while providing backup to the others whenever necessary.
Beckett didn’t hesitate to bring out the heavy weapons he had kept hidden.
Running a hand along one of the gun barrels, he sighed. “I never thought I’d have to use these against our own people. My old friends deserved better.”
Leonel said, “There’s no such thing as our own people anymore. There are only those who can be trusted and those who can’t.”
