Chapter 126 First Shot
Beckett smiled. “You still don’t see it, do you?
“Those refugees aren’t the real threat. They’re just the first wave. The central shelter’s elite operatives will be the ones who make the real move. Some of them may have served with me before. Others may know exactly how I operate. Either way, this battle will decide whether Karthmoor or the central shelter comes out on top.
“If we lose, the Karthmoor shelter will be dismantled, Aurora Base will be seized, and I’ll be branded a war criminal and executed. As for you, Mr. Wright, the central shelter will strip you of everything you have They won’t stop until there’s nothing left.
“They came here to kill us, so why should we let them walk away? Like I said, someone on their side understands battlefield tactics. He knows how I fight and what choices I’m likely to make, so he’ll adjust his plan around the defenses I just described. But he’ll never expect me to put someone with no formal military training in the most important position. That’s exactly why I’m doing it. I want to throw him off and hit him where he least expects it.”
Leonel and the captain immediately understood and gave Beckett a thumbs-up.
Leonel was relieved that Beckett had truly thought it through.
Some of those people might once have been his fellow soldiers, but now everyone was fighting for their own survival.
“Alright. We’ll do it your way.” Leonel nodded.
Autumn was surprised by the assignment, but she accepted it without hesitation. “Fine. I’ll go.”
She wasn’t afraid.
Beckett positioned her in a hollow across from the Karthmoor shelter and gave her a massive supply of weapons and ammunition.
She had three jobs. First, when the main force of refugees attacked the shelter, she would provide covering fire. Second, she would identify the commander and take him out with a single burst. Third, she would wait for Beckett’s orders and shoot whoever he designated.
The assignment didn’t sound difficult to Autumn, so she agreed without hesitation.
At that same moment, 50 miles away, several members of the refugee force sat together planning their attack.
“I know Beckett too well. The polite way to put it is that he’s compassionate and honorable. The honest way is that he’s a self-righteous hero,” a man in his thirties said, pointing at a map. “He takes care of his own, which means he’ll keep his best troops at Aurora Base. We’ll avoid the base, hit the Karthmoor shelter directly, and send a smaller force to distract Leonel’s hilltop shelter. The people above offered 1,000 pounds of food for capturing either Scott or Leonel. Whether we get that reward is up to us.
Everyone around him lit up.
A thousand pounds of food.
Ramoned carefully, it could last an entire year.
Who didn’t want to survive?
Who didn’t want to eat a decent meal again?
“But I heard Leonel has someone dangerous working for him,” one man objected. “Supposedly, he’s an incredible shot.”
