Chapter 13 The Cave

“Oh, by the way, have you picked a place to stay yet?” David asked.

Autumn shook her head.

“I actually know a great spot. It’s up in the mountains outside Karthmoor. Back when I used to go hiking with some outdoor enthusiasts, I found a cave by accident. The location is perfect. If you don’t know exactly where to look, you’ll never find it. Best of all, once the path is blocked, no one can get up there. Completely secure.”

Autumn’s interest was immediately piqued. “We can go check it out.”

“Sounds good. I’ll give you the location.” David quickly scribbled down an address and handed it to her. If flooding is really coming, you’d better stock up on boats.”

“Will do.” Autumn nodded. She had already planned on doing that anyway. “Nobody at the restaurant suspects anything, right?”

“Suspect what?” David chuckled bitterly. “They’re all the type who live for today and don’t worry about tomorrow. As long as the paychecks keep coming, they don’t ask questions.”

“Good. David, remember this. Don’t try to be everyone’s savior. In the apocalypse, the nice ones die first,” Autumn warned him.

David’s mouth twitched. “Got it.”

Autumn headed straight for the cave David had mentioned.

As for why she wasn’t planning to buy a high-rise apartment to hide in?

Please.

That idea was hilarious.

No matter how sturdy a building looked, it was nothing in the face of a true catastrophe.

Especially those people obsessed with reinforcing their doors and windows. That was even funnier.

So what if your front door was built to bank-vault standards? What good would that do? Couldn’t someone just smash through the wall?

As long as others could smash through the wall, even the strongest door in the world wouldn’t stop looters.

And that wasn’t even counting people upstairs. They could punch a hole straight through the floor in no time.

Modern apartment buildings used lightweight foam bricks. They were fragile. With a few hits, they’d punch right through.

As for those who talked about wrapping their entire apartment in steel and turning it into a fortress?

Yeah. Right.

Had they ever considered the load-bearing limits?

Weren’t they worried about bringing the whole building down?

With one minor earthquake, the thing would come apart like a pile of rubble.

Then there were the ones who kept saying humans were social creatures and needed to live among crowds.

That was even more ridiculous.

Who cared about living in groups when they were one step away from death? Anyone still insisting on communal living was acting like a pack of animals. Were they trying to make themselves easier targets?

Even the ancients understood the principle of never standing beneath a crumbling wall. So why was it that all those so-called heroes and heroines in other stories never seemed to get that?

They wandered around wearing spotless clothes, well-fed and healthy-looking, carrying their pets through crowds of starving refugees and showing off like idiots. Naturally, people would target them.

Did they not have a single ounce of common sense?

If they wanted to survive, then they should hide somewhere nobody could find them, somewhere relatively safe. They should stay hidden until the people outside lost the strength to fight, then slowly rebuild and develop from there.
