Chapter 136 A Feast No One Wanted
Good Abyrything’s holding steady.
If you get bored, help yourselves,” Autumn said with a lazy stretch. “There are card games, poker and board games on the table. If that’s not your thing, there’s a game console too. I’m going to get some sleep
Sounds good. We’ll take turns keeping watch,” everyone replied with easy smiles. “Don’t worry. Go ger some rest
Things were fairly peaceful on Autumn’s side.
Leonel, in the neighboring cave, was staying calm too.
The biggest advantage was that they had enough people. They could rotate shifts, meals, and sleep without exhausting anyone.
The people at Westfield Town, on the next mountain over, weren’t nearly as lucky.
They barely dared to move.
Everyone wore thick layers of clothing without leaving a single patch of skin exposed. They hid inside trenches with stone slabs over their heads, covered by several layers of heavy plastic sheeting. Then they huddled at the bottom of the trenches and simply endured.
Even so, they had it better than some.
The trenches were miserable, but they were sturdy enough. The mutant flying ants could swarm around them, but they couldn’t chew through the defenses.
The underground shelter had it much worse.
Large numbers of flying ants squeezed through tiny gaps and invaded the shelter, throwing everything into chaos.
At first the wealthy residents had been feeling pretty safe. Living underground, they thought nothing could reach them.
The ants proved them wrong.
Many people were bitten. They developed raging fevers that wouldn’t break, along with infected sores and rotting wounds. Some were rushed to the hospital the very same day.
The entire shelter fell into panic
Fortunately, Scott had taken full control of the shelter. Thanks to his leadership, they barely managed to keep the situation from falling apart.
The insect-repellent coating Leonel had developed worked.
It really did drive away mosquitoes and similar insects. The problem was that there were simply too many. They had is detend and extermmate them at the same time.
The more days passed
At last the wave of mutant flying ants was over.
Someone reported to Scott that the mutant ants were actually edible.”
Scon’s eyes hit up immediately.
Autumn struggled to push open the door. Outside, the ground was carpeted with countless dead ants. She couldn’t help sighing.
Cleaning all this up was going to be another massive job.
