Chapter 141 A Lot of Stuff
Autumn turned and found Leonel. “We’re all in this together, Leonel. Aurora Base, the shelter, and us 1 one side goes down…”
Just tell me what to do. Leonel cut her off before she could finish building up to it. “I don’t need the context. Point me at the work and I’ll handle it.”
Autumn smiled.
This guy was a born hoarder if she’d ever seen one. Almost too sharp for his own good.
Fine, no buildup then. We need to get these survival pods to Aurora Base and the shelter before the floodwaters get here. Save whoever we can.” She paused. “The earthquake could hit at any point. And when it does, it’s going to be catastrophic. Even with the pods, we might not be able to save everyone. Be ready
for that.”
Leonel fell silent for a moment. “I know. We’ll do what we can.”
He got word to Beckett and Scott right away.
Both of them showed up fast, rolling in with a convoy of large trucks.
“Leonel, you absolute legend.” Beckett clapped him on the shoulder, practically buzzing. “You always come through with exactly what’s needed. I should’ve tracked you down years ago. I wouldn’t be scrambling like this right now. And I’m not letting you do this for free. Look at all this gold, we worked around the clock pulling it together. Smelting our own just wasn’t fast enough.”
Leonel looked over the crates of gold. “So you went and robbed someone.”
“Yeah.” Beckett said it without a hint of shame.
There was nothing left of the upright, principled man he used to be.
The fear of death had ground all that righteousness down to dust.
“I led the raid myself on a high roller’s convoy out of the central shelter. Was going for food, but it turned out to be gold. Figured you’d want it more than anything else, so here it is.” Beckett dropped his voice. “The central shelter is a complete mess right now. Everyone’s scrambling to hoard whatever they can. You’d think people would figure out that money means nothing at the end of the world, but here we are.”
Leonel gave him a thumbs up. “Impressive, Chief Bauer.”
Scott’s haul came in slightly lower quality than Beckett’s, mostly jewelry with very few actual bars.
Leonel raised an eyebrow. “Mr. Marsh, don’t tell me you went raiding too.”
Scott smiled like he was keeping a secret. “Me? Raid people? I just let the wealthy residents in the shelter know that if they wanted a survival pod, they’d need to pay in gold. They were more enthusiastic about it than I expected. I barely got the words out before they were already rounding everything up themselves.”
Leonel stared for a moment, then his thumb went up again.
Sean had gemune ability.
