Autumn was more amused by that remark, if anything.

James came back and gave his report in a low, subdued voice. “Three dead, two critically injured, twenty-five with minor injuries.”

“Didn’t I tell everyone to get into the survival pods? How did anyone still die?” Leonel couldn’t make sense of it.

“There’s always someone who doesn’t take it seriously.” James shook his head, resigned. “Family members from Zain’s group. They didn’t believe a real earthquake was coming and insisted on going back to work. When it hit, falling rocks caught them in the head. Gone on the spot.”

Leonel didn’t even know where to start.

“Their time was up,” Autumn said flatly. “They made their choice, and they paid for it.”

Leonel let out a slow breath. “Whatever happened, they were our people. Give them a proper burial.”

“Do it fast,” Autumn told them. “This won’t be the only quake. Aftershocks are coming, and everyone needs to move now.”

“Understood!”

Leonel stopped Autumn before she could leave. “Autumn, do me a favor and pull everything else out of my cave. If the mountain collapses and buries it all, I’ll lose my mind.” (D

“Done,” Autumn said.

While everyone focused on treating the wounded, Autumn cleared out the rest of Leonel’s supplies into her storage space, leaving behind only enough to last three days.

The losses were significant.

Plenty of things had been crushed and broken, scattered across the ground in pieces.

Autumn took it all anyway, damaged or not, sweeping everything into her storage space. You never knew what might prove useful later.

Once that was done, Autumn made her way back to her own cave, now completely open to the sky, and found David fussing over Kayla with obvious concern.

Kayla noticed Autumn and pulled her hand back with a slightly embarrassed look. “I was worried about you all, so I came to check.”

“None of the teachers got hurt, I hope?” Autumn asked.

“None of us.” Kayla answered. “Mr. Wright told us to get into the survival pods, and every single one of us listened. We all know what earthquakes can do, so nobody played tough. We stayed put the whole time. If we hadn’t had those pods, we’d all be dead right now.”

Kayla still looked shaken to her core.

Most people had never experienced anything like this in their lives.

Staying calm under that kind of pressure was asking a lot. Just keeping yourself together was already an achievement.

“Everyone sticks to ready-to-eat rations for the next few days. No cooking fires,” Autumn told Kayla. “Food, water, bathroom breaks, keep all of it inside the survival pods.”

“Got it. I’ll let Mr. Wright know.” Kayla gave David one last, lingering look before stepping away. “You two stay safe!”

David watched Kayla leave with watery eyes. “Autumn, will the aftershocks be just as bad?”

“Hard to say. Probably, and they might hit even harder than what we just went through,” Autumn answered plainly.

The color drained from David’s face all at once.

Everyone got to work after that, clearing out the collapsed sections of the cave and salvaging whatever supplies remained, loading it all into the survival pods.

Each person got a bag of ready-to-eat rations, chocolate, and bottled water, and settled in to wait for what was coming.

Sure enough, the aftershock arrived as night fell.

It started as a subtle, tentative shudder, then built into a full, violent tremor.

That same stomach-dropping dizziness swept over everything all over again.

A sharp crack like a gunshot erupted from the neighboring peak, followed by a deep, grinding roar. Through the shaking window, Autumn watched the hillside that had once housed Westfield Town shatter apart without warning, collapsing into loose rubble and plunging into the water below.

Even Autumn’s expression went tight at that.

Leonel had specifically reinforced that hillside. She could only hope theirs held.

The aftershock lasted roughly as long as the first. When it finally stopped, their cave had been stripped bare.
