Another deep rumble sounded as a massive wave crashed toward her.

Autumn watched as her survival pod was lifted high into the air, then slammed back down.

Thankfully, the survival pod was aerospace-grade. Otherwise, she was sure the pod would have broken apart with her inside it.

The third time her pod was hurled into the air, the current carried her all the way toward the shelter.

Through the window, she saw that it had collapsed.

The shelter’s once-towering walls had been shattered by the tsunami.

The survival pods inside spilled out one after another and were swept away.

Desperate screams came from many of them. Some people pounded frantically on the windows, begging for help.

Autumn guessed that the oxygen systems in those pods had been damaged, and they were running out of air.

But who could save anyone now?

Everyone was at the mercy of the current.

Autumn had no idea how long she drifted before she eventually fell asleep.

When she woke, she was alone on an endless stretch of ocean. She had no idea where she was or how much time had passed.

She unfastened her safety belt and stretched her arms and legs before checking the mechanical device she used to track time.

Three days.

It had been three days since the tsunami began.

Autumn turned on the two-way radio and called out, but no one answered.

That meant she was more than two miles from the shelter.

“I wonder how David is doing.” Autumn sighed, then calmly pulled a self-heating hot pot her storage space.

Back at the hilltop shelter, she had needed to be careful around other people.

Now there wasn’t another person in sight, so there was no need for her to pretend.

She could eat whatever she wanted.

After finishing her meal, Autumn put the survival pod back into her storage space and took out a small speedboat. She filled the tank, guessed a direction, and pushed the throttle forward.

Every so often, she had to stop and check her direction again with a compass.

The satellites were gone, so every electronic navigation device had stopped working. They could only rely on old-fashioned compasses to find their way.

Fortunately, Autumn knew how to use them.

She continued like that for nearly half a day before finally spotting a survival pod floating in the distance.

She hurried toward it, but before she got close, the gruesome sight inside nearly made her throw up the food she’d eaten.

The inside of the pod was covered in blood.

They hadn’t killed one another.

One corner of the pod had been smashed open. Something had gotten in through the opening and killed everyone inside.

Autumn had no idea what it was.

The ocean was filled with countless creatures, and many of them were dangerous.

For her own safety, she only observed from a distance. She had no intention of going closer to recover the bodies.

Dying at sea might not have been the worst fate. The only downside was that there might not be an intact body left behind.

But in this apocalypse, how many people could expect that anyway?
