Chapter 154 Survivors

Chapter 154 Survivors

Autumn didn’t know what to say.

At a time like this, nothing she said would make a difference.

She looked up at the sky. It was getting late.

“We should find somewhere to spend the night,” she said. “Once it gets dark, we stay put.”

“All right.”

Autumn traveled for another hour. Just before night fell completely, she finally found a small island.

It wasn’t really an island. It had once been a mountain peak.

After the tsunami flooded everything around it, the mountain peak had become an island.

Autumn secured the boat and had the survivors help one another ashore. After drifting on the water for several days, standing on solid ground again felt almost unreal.

Once darkness covered the island, Autumn put the speedboat into her storage space. Pretending to retrieve supplies from the boat, she took out some fuel and ready-to-eat food instead.

Everyone had been given food and water before taking shelter from the tsunami, so no one questioned where her supplies had come from.

They lit a fire and huddled together for warmth. No one spoke. They simply sat there in silence, grieving.

Autumn walked around the island and estimated that it covered several thousand square feet. She figured it should be large enough for them to stay there temporarily.

Just then, static crackled through the radio earpiece that had been silent for days. “Is anyone nearby? Are there any survivors? If you can hear this message, head toward Aurora Base immediately. I repeat, all nearby survivors who hear this message, please…”

Autumn’s eyes lit up.

Aurora Base!

Beckett!

She quickly retrieved the two-way radio from her storage space and tried each channel. “Hello? This is Asher. Respond if you can hear me!”

After a long wait, a voice finally came through the static. “Asher, thank God you’re alive! It’s Killian!”

“Killian? Are you with Leonel? Is he okay?” Autumn asked quickly.

“Yes, I’m with him. Asher, are you hurt?” Killian replied at once. “Mr. Wright suffered a few minor injuries, but he’s fine. We’re waiting for the others right now. In three days, we’ll all head to Aurora Base together. It’s the only mountain area in Karthmoor that’s still intact. Let’s meet there in three days.”

“Okay.” Autumn paused. “Have you seen David?”

“No. Mr. Fisher and Ms. Atkinson were swept away together. We lost sight of them almost immediately. Mr. Wright said that Mr. Fisher has always been lucky, so he’ll make it through this too,” Killian said. “Asher, be careful out there.”

“You too.”

Autumn shared the good news with the others, and faint smiles finally appeared on their faces.

After drifting alone across the endless ocean for days, the loneliness and emotional strain were almost unbearable.

People weren’t meant to live in isolation.

At the very least, having others around reminded them that they were still alive.

They made it through the night without incident.

At dawn, Autumn secretly switched the speedboat for a larger yacht. She told them she’d found it drifting nearby.

They accepted the explanation without question.

After all, anything was possible after a tsunami like that.

They had already grown numb to seeing bodies floating in the water.

“The survivors are gathering at Aurora Base,” Autumn said. “I’ll take you all there. Your families may already be waiting for you.”

A look of hope finally appeared in their eyes. “Thank you so much.”

Before the tsunami, Autumn could have easily found Aurora Base.

Now, however, the endless ocean stretched in every direction. She had to use her compass again and again before finally confirming the right direction. Then she pushed the yacht to full speed and headed toward Aurora Base.

After nearly half a day, they finally arrived.

More and more boats appeared across the water. They were all searching for survivors.

Autumn was well known at Aurora Base. Before she could say anything, someone recognized

her.

“Asher! You’re alive! That’s wonderful!” A young man rowed over excitedly. “Chief Bauer’s been asking about all of you nonstop!”

“Hello. Is Beckett okay?” Autumn pointed to the people behind her. “I rescued them along the way. I’ll leave them with you.”
