Beckett let out a sigh. “Gentlemen, I won’t do what Scott did and ask you for paperwork, because paperwork or no paperwork, the outcome is the same.”
“Meaning what?” they asked, not following.
“This earthquake and tsunami came far too suddenly. The armory was flooded with seawater. If you don’t believe me, you’re welcome to go salvage it yourselves, and whatever you can haul up, you can keep. I’ve sent men down several times already, and they’ve come back with nothing every time. The water there is over 1,600 feet deep. No man can dive that far.” Beckett had the look of someone with nothing left to lose, and he handed over the location of an entire armory without so much as blinking. “There isn’t much left in my hands these days. We’ve been living off Scott’s charity all this time. Now that you’re here, you’re surely not going to leave us to fend for ourselves? Did you bring supplies? Food, fresh water, medicine, clothing?”
The men were stunned.
This was not the outcome they had expected.
Not only had they failed to get anything out of him, but Beckett was also now asking them for supplies.
This was nothing like the confrontation they had prepared for.
“Beckett, you wouldn’t be stringing us along, would you?” one of them said, pressing him. “How could the timing possibly be that convenient?”
“Somebody take these gentlemen out and let them dive down and see it with their own eyes.” Shameless as ever, Beckett called over his orderly, the very picture of a man with nothing to hide.
That shut the delegation up entirely.
Beckett sighed again. “The earthquake came out of nowhere. I never imagined the tsunami would be that big. At the time, everyone was running for their lives. Who had time to worry about heavy equipment? And there was so much of it. How exactly was I supposed to carry it
out?
“We left most of our rations behind so we could fit more people in. We took a week’s worth, and that ran out long ago. If Scott hadn’t taken pity on us and handed over some food, we’d have been starved by now,” Beckett said.

The men said, “We didn’t bring many supplies with us. How about this instead. Bring your people to the central shelter, Beckett. They’ll allocate you funding, supplies, and territory.”
“That won’t work.” Beckett spun his nonsense with a perfectly straight face. “I’m a stubborn man. My superiors told me to guard these weapons, and I’ve gone and lost them, which makes it a dereliction of duty. I can’t let them fall into anyone else’s hands, so I’ll stay right here and keep watch. Whether or not anyone manages to salvage them, I’m staying. As for my men, if they want to go with you to the central shelter, I won’t stand in their way. I’m simply not going.”
His soldiers spoke up at once. “We’re not going either. We’re staying right here with the chief.”
Beckett said, with entirely false regret, “Oh dear. What a stubborn bunch of children. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

The men were livid, but they had no answer.
“Beckett, you… you’re on your own!” With that, he stormed off in a huff.
Beckett winked at his own people, and every one of them covered a mouth and snickered.
Two days later, the hillside that had been packed shoulder to shoulder suddenly stood empty.
Nearly 400,000 able-bodied adults had been talked into going off to make a living at the central shelter.
The rest were either people the central shelter had turned its nose up at, the people left behind after the central shelter had chosen who it wanted, or people whose minds were made up, who firmly believed that staying with Scott beat anything waiting for them out there.
Which left the population of Karthmoor, counting Beckett’s men and Leonel’s people and everyone else, at a little over 800,000.
Scott looked out at his crowd of the old and the weak without letting a flicker of it show on his face, and steadied them the way he always did. “Don’t lose heart, everyone. Our shelter may be gone, but the hills are still here, and as long as we have the hills, we have a home. And I have good news for you. The Karthmoor shelter has now formally merged with Aurora Base. In one day, we will carve out living space right here for all 800,000 of us. What’s more, most of Aurora Base’s supplies are still intact. Nobody is going to go hungry.”
The moment he finished, the 800,000 who had stayed broke down in tears and threw their arms around their families and friends.
Beckett stepped forward as well. “I, Beckett Bauer, give you my word. As long as I am alive, I will not give up on a single one of you. Yes, we’re down to 800,000 people, but that also means
