Silas’s juniors, freshly chewed out, hurried off to fetch the others back.

Killian waited outside the door for a while before he knocked and stepped in. “Silas, Mr. Wright wants to see you.”

Silas shot to his feet. “Right away. Killian, about how we feel toward Mr. Wright, we…”

“Save it. You don’t need to explain, I understand,” Killian said with a grin. “Other people might not know, but I do. With the food Mr. Wright puts on the table, nobody’s leaving. You’d have to be out of your mind. And if a man’s out of his mind, we wouldn’t want him anyway. Am I right?”

Silas laughed. “You are. I’ll head over now. Thanks.”

Killian thumped him once on the chest. That was all the understanding men like them needed.

Silas came and stood in front of Leonel. “You wanted to see me, Mr. Wright?”

“Silas, there’s something I need to trouble you with.” Leonel waved him closer. “The central shelter has come at us again and again, and I’ve never been able to swallow it.”

“So what you want is…”

“I want you and your juniors to use this recruiting drive as cover and slip in with them,” Leonel said, dropping his voice. “Whatever you learn, you get it back to me right away.”

Seeing Silas’s expression change, Leonel added quickly, “Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not throwing you away, and I’m certainly not driving you out. I’d have to be insane. A few dozen men like you are worth several hundred ordinary fighters. Sending you in undercover hurts me plenty. But there’s no other way. The central shelter doesn’t trust Beckett’s people, and Scott’s people aren’t loyal enough; they’d be turned in a heartbeat. So I thought of you.”

Leonel lowered his voice further. “All of that is secondary, though. What matters most is that I want to make money. The people at the central shelter have been sucking the blood out of hundreds of millions of people. All that wealth went straight into their pockets. What kind of businessman would I be if I didn’t get their supplies out of them?

“I wouldn’t trust this to anyone else, but I know you can pull it off. You built a gym of your own and ran it well, which tells me you understand business. With my backing and your ability, this deal is a sure thing.

“When the time comes, we split it 70-30. Thirty for you, 70 for me, and don’t think that’s

stingy, because I still have to cut Beckett and Scott in.” Leonel winked at him. “We make money together, and we share the rewards. I have never shortchanged my own people. Someday, once these hills of ours are underwater, we may all have to come running to you. That makes you our advance man.

“I won’t hide it from you. Beckett at Aurora Base, Scott at the shelter, and I have already come to an agreement. The three of us are allied now, which naturally means shared resources and shared connections. Scott and Beckett both have their own people planted inside the central shelter. Once you’re in, make contact with them directly. With the two of them smoothing the way, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with the shelter’s upper ranks in no time.

“After that, how much you can pull out of their pockets is down to your own skill,” Leonel said. “And don’t say I don’t look after you. I’ve told one person about this, and that person is you. Zain isn’t going. I have something else in mind for him.”

Silas’s expression shifted from alarm to excitement as Leonel laid out the plan.

By the time Leonel had laid out his real intentions and his real plan, Silas sat up straighter.

“Mr. Wright, if you’re trusting me with something this important, I will not let you down,” Silas said with force. “Just watch. I’ll bleed that central shelter crowd for every last dime they’ve got!”

“I trust you, and I’ll be waiting for good news. Remember, gold comes first. After that, focus on anything that counts as a resource.” Leonel reminded him, “I’m not sending anyone in with you this time, so the two dozen of you will be on your own out there. You’re lone fighters. Once you’re out there, take care of yourselves. If you ever run into real danger, forget the money and run straight home. I’ll be waiting at home for your triumphant return!”

Silas was so worked up he could barely get the words out, and simply kept nodding. “Mr. Wright, wait for the good news.”

“Go on.” Leonel clapped him on the shoulder with a smile.

Silas walked out with an unsteady step, half floating.

The moment he was gone, Autumn slipped out from the back and said, “That is an impressive talent you have for buttering people up. A few sentences and Silas would follow you off a cliff.”

Leonel smiled. “I butter you up too, and I don’t see you following me off any

cliffs.”

“Save it.” Autumn rolled her eyes at him. “Sending Silas in undercover, aren’t you worried he’ll slip out of your control?”

“The worst thing you can do is hesitate. If I’m bold enough to do it, I’m prepared to carry the
