Kayla’s face changed, and she started to fire back, but Autumn said mildly, “Let’s just eat our food and let her run her mouth. Why bother with her? If you can’t stand listening to it, just slap her mouth shut until she’s got nothing left to run.”
Kayla snorted into her hand.
All four of the women teachers adored Autumn.
Not just because she was a woman, but because she was terrifyingly capable. That fighting ability of hers made a person want to scream out loud at any hour of the day. She was more of a man than any man in the place.
It made them feel unbelievably safe.
Kayla lowered her voice. “That girl’s from the old shelter. Bernice Vance. Her father used to be the regional distributor for a pharmaceutical company. When they were building the shelter, he donated tens of millions of dollars’ worth of medicine and equipment. The family’s been sitting at the top of the pile ever since.”
“How do you know all that?” Autumn asked, surprised.
“I had time on my hands, so I made myself a chart of who’s connected to who,” Kayla said. “Now that the shelters have merged, there are going to be all kinds of problems. There are people around here you wouldn’t recognize, and that’s exactly how someone gets blindsided. Better to eat well than to eat dirt. I didn’t want you getting caught out.”
Autumn smiled at her, warm.
“Don’t worry about it. I don’t care how much of a big shot they think they are-in the apocalypse, they still have to keep their heads down and behave around me,” Autumn said.
The second she finished, the little princess at the next table seemed to take offense that nobody had picked up her line.
She slammed her fork down hard enough to rattle her plate. “Unbelievable. I really don’t get it! There’s a perfectly good central shelter out there, and instead we’re stuck holed up on this hill, running into freaks and lowlifes every single day. It’s enough to put a person off her food!”
Autumn kept working calmly through her stew, not registering a word of it.

Kayla couldn’t hold it in any longer. She shot to her feet. “Who exactly are you throwing shade at? Asher gets to eat that beef because she’s the one who donated it in the first place! If even the owner doesn’t have the right to eat it, then who does?”
“She donated it? Who are you trying to fool? Everybody knows the lot of you turned up here with nothing and have been mooching off us ever since. Every bite you eat, every drop you drink, comes out of our shelter.” Bernice put her hands on her hips. “I honestly don’t know what my father is thinking, keeping a pack of freeloaders like you fed. With those supplies, we could’ve gone to the central shelter and lived like royalty!”
“So that’s what’s eating you.” Autumn finished the last piece of beef and wiped her fingers, taking her time. “You want to go to the central shelter? Then go. No need to sit here taking potshots.”
“I’d love to go! There’s volcanic ash everywhere out there, so how exactly am I supposed to?” Bernice blurted. “If it weren’t for you people, my family would’ve been at the central shelter ages ago. I’ve heard all about it. Music, dancing, everybody happy. Not like this godforsaken place, where you can’t even get off the hill.”
“And what does any of that have to do with some folks get to live high on the hog while the others are left out to dry?” Kayla demanded. “Do you even know what that means?”
“I…” Bernice genuinely didn’t.
She’d failed nearly every class she’d ever taken.
“And here I thought you were some great humanitarian. Turns out you just want to live like an aristocrat too. I’ll give you this much, though-you’re honest. You’ve never once bothered to hide what you want or how far you’d go to get it,” Autumn said. “Your father’s name is…”
“My father is Harlan Vance. What of it? Scared now?” Bernice said, smug. “Now that you know better, keep your distance from me from here on. You’re nothing but cheap trash. Just sitting at the same table as a lowlife like you taints my plate.”
Bernice rolled her eyes. “Look at the state of you. Poor as dirt. How long did you have to save up your credits to afford one meal in here?”
“Hang on. Weren’t you just going on about some folks living high on the hog while the others are left out to dry?” Kayla shot back. “If you’re that full of love for your fellow man, why don’t you hand your own food over to the poor people who can’t afford a meal?”
“I… how am I the same as those people?” Bernice stammered on and on and never did find her way out of her own logic.
“I’ve met fake innocents, and I’ve met women who play a dozen men at once, but I have never

met a princess who flunked out of school,” Autumn said. “Today’s been an education.”
Kayla snorted out loud.
“You dare laugh at me? I’ll beat you to death!” Bernice’s hand came up to slap her.
Predictably, Autumn caught her by the wrist.

“You dare hit my people right in front of me? Do I look dead to you?” Autumn shoved, hard, and Bernice went stumbling back a dozen steps before she landed flat on the floor.
