Autumn perked up at once and pulled Leonel down to sit. “Come on, let’s talk while we eat. I’ll eat, you talk.”
Leonel took the cue and sat across from her. Seeing she had no time to peel her shrimp, he washed his hands and peeled them for her.
He peeled as he talked. “I always figured the central shelter was rich, but I never guessed it was this rich. Back then, the tycoons from all the northern provinces headed there.
“Later the seas rose. The eastern, southeastern, and southern shelters all flooded, and the rich moved out in a wave. The coastal money went either to the southwestern shelter or the central one, and plenty of inland tycoons went too. The rich there live in real style. The central shelter wasn’t lying; life there really is about the same as before the apocalypse..
“The moment Silas and the others got in, they picked up the line Beckett and Scott had left behind and joined up with them. Then they went into business together, aiming straight at the rich, supplying the scarce things they wanted in exchange for gold.
“On condoms alone, they made this much.” Leonel held up one hand.
“Fifty pounds?” Autumn’s eyes went wide.
“Guess again.” Leonel shook his head, smiling.
“Not fifty pounds, then. Five hundred?” she asked.
“I just told you these people are loaded. Guess bold. Don’t guess cheap. Back at the Karthmoor shelter, that fool Forrest paid a gold bar a pop just for water at his parties. This is the central shelter we’re talking about, and they’ve got money to burn.” Leonel set the peeled shrimp on her plate.
“Fifty tons?” Her voice shook a little.
“That’s right.” Leonel nodded, smiling. “Didn’t see that coming, did you?”
“I really didn’t. They’re actually willing to pay that.” Autumn quickly checked her own stock and lit up. “Oh my god, I’ve still got a whole shipping container of condoms. Think how much gold that’s worth. We’re rich, Leonel, we’re rich.”
Leonel loved this greedy little streak of hers.
He went on. “That’s just the condoms. It doesn’t count the Vital Blue tablets, or the women’s

heels, silk stockings, diamonds, and makeup. Small stuff, all of it, but the markup is insane.”
Autumn nodded like mad. “Leonel, you’re a genius. I used to give you grief about it, hoarding all that junk for the apocalypse. Turns out it was all meant for right now. You’re the perfect businessman.”
Leonel smiled. “Even in the apocalypse, there are always people who love the high life. If you don’t clean them out now, when will you?”
“Right, right.” Autumn asked eagerly, “So how much gold came in this time?”
“A full hundred tons,” Leonel said. “When these people moved to the central shelter, they took their local gold reserves with them, cleaned out every vault back home. That’s why the central shelter is so loaded. The gold’s in my cave now. Go collect it once you’ve eaten.”
“Hold on. The acid rain out there is brutal right now. How did the gold even get from the central shelter over here?” she asked, curious.
Leonel smiled. “I already tested it. The all-terrain protective suit holds up in acid rain for 48 hours. After that, the protection weakens, but it still works at reduced performance. We’ve got so many of these suits. It’d be a crime against all that gold not to use them to earn.
“So I had my people take the suits, build a boat with a shell of aircraft-grade acid-resistant survival pod material, and take a little trip to the central shelter. One, to check on Silas. Two, to deliver goods. After all, they went in empty-handed.
“The moment those suits showed up in the central shelter, people fought over them. The rich have everything except protection. And they’ve got money and supplies to spare, so the moment they heard about full-coverage protection, they spent without blinking. The last ten sets went to auction, eleven pounds of gold apiece.
“Just like that, demand outran supply. Silas has already locked in supply deals with several of the rich, just waiting on us to deliver. Gold, that easy.” By the end, Leonel couldn’t help laughing.
He’d been in business for years, and honestly, this was the easiest deal he’d ever seen.
He’d priced the suits at two ounces a set, and the frenzy drove it to 11 pounds. There was no stopping them. They bid the price up all on their own.
Hearing all this, Autumn could barely keep eating.
She shot to her feet. “Come on, let’s go find David. Have him lay out a grand banquet to send over to Silas. Silas and the others are the real heroes here. They get the top treatment.”
