Chapter 28 Shelter Priority
“Running the air conditioner every day is killing me on the electric bill! I don’t even make two hundred dollars a day, and my monthly power bill is already over two thousand dollars. How are people supposed to live like this?!”
“Tell me about it. I’ve already moved my parents in with me. We’re all crammed into one room sharing thy air conditioning to save on electricity.”
“Yeah… My father-in-law couldn’t handle it anymore. We just held his funeral yesterday.”
“My condolences.”
Autumn saw the line of cars ahead begin moving and expressionlessly started her own car to follow them.
For now, people could still barely tolerate the temperature.
In another three days, most of them wouldn’t be able to anymore.
By the time the sky began to brighten up, Autumn had finally returned to Karthmoor.
The tension she had been carrying in her chest finally eased.
From this moment on, unless absolutely necessary, she had no intention of going outside again.
She hadn’t stockpiled all those supplies just to suffer.
When she returned to the shelter, she saw David diligently watering the onions, ginger, and garlic to help cool them down.
Even inside the cave, the temperature had climbed to nearly 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
“You’re back.” The moment David saw Autumn, the worry on his face visibly eased. “You must be exhausted. I made some fruit punch and a salad for you. Go eat something and get some rest.”
“Okay.” Autumn went to take a shower first. She didn’t even bother drying her hair before coming back out, water still dripping from it.
It would be completely dry in less than five minutes anyway.
After wolfing down her meal, she returned to her room and immediately fell asleep.
In the neighboring cave, James reported to Leonel.
“At six o’clock this morning, the port was placed under complete government control. According to our sources, Ms. Montclair took away approximately twenty billion dollars’ worth of cargo from the port. I honestly don’t know how she managed it. Three hours. It was almost miraculous.”
“It really was miraculous.” Leonel sighed. “That’s probably where her confidence comes from. We should maintain a good relationship with her. We may need her help one day. By the way, have the survival pods she requested arrived yet?”
They should be delivered tonight,” James replied. “I also ordered twenty extra units. We have a total of one hundred and two people. The eight-person pods should be enough to get us through the earthquakes and tsunamis.”
Good. Give Autumn two extra pods.”
“Understood.”
“Spread the word. After tonight final shipment is collected, everyone comes back.” Leonel glanced at the thermometer outside and at the temperature reports coming in through surveillance feeds from various locations. His expression turned serious. “From here on out, we’re entering hell mode.”
“Yes, Mr. Wright.”
That evening, the survival pods arrived.
Autumn absolutely loved them.
The pods had been custom-built in Nipponia and were incredibly luxurious.
