Chapter 29 Wildfire Alert
Leonel gave a cold smile. “They’re the best at taking advantage of opportunities. Don’t worry about them. What’s the latest news on the shelters in Karthmoor?”
“The shelters in Karthmoor have already started accepting applications. Once they heard you were in Karthmoor, they contacted me directly. Mr. Wright, do we want to get involved?” James asked.
Leonel thought for a moment before answering, “We can contribute some supplies and secure a few more shelter spots. But we’re not moving into a shelter.”
“Yes, sir.” James nodded. “Should we let Ms. Montclair know?”
“Tell her about it,” Leonel said. “And while you’re at it, ask her when exactly the next disaster is going to happen.”
“Understood.” James immediately turned and went to find Autumn,
“A shelter?” Autumn shook her head. “I’m not going.”
At first, shelters were great. They really did save a lot of people.
That was when the government was still functioning.
Once things fell apart, the satellites went down, communications were lost, and everyone started fending for themselves, the shelters turned into slaughterhouses.
The people living inside suffered through hellish conditions.
She had experienced it herself in her previous life.
This time, she had her own shelter. She had no intention of putting herself through that again.
James nodded. “Mr. Wright feels the same way. He hopes to remain aligned with you as long as possible. Tonight, we’ll be permanently closing the road that leads from the foot of the mountain to the summit. If you ever need to leave, you’re welcome to use our alternate access route.”
Autumn nodded in understanding. “You move fast. But I won’t be going anywhere until the heat wave ends. By the way, tell Leonel that the extreme heat and drought will last for three months. Right now, we’re not even one month in. After those three months, there’ll be a massive storm unlike anything people have ever seen. It’ll be like the sky splitting open. You should start preparing dehumidification measures now. This mountain is high enough that it probably won’t flood, but transportation will likely depend on boats and inflatable rafts.”
“Understood. Thank you.” James smiled politely. “If you need anything else, Ms. Montclair, just ask. If we can help, we will.”
“Sounds good.” Autumn didn’t bother being overly polite.
After James left, David walked over while wiping his hands on a towel. His face was full of concern. “Is it really going to be as bad as you said?”
‘It’ll be even worse.”
David fell silent for a moment before saying. “Then I’ll prepare more food. If we ever have to flee, cooking on the road won’t be practical, and it could attract unwanted attention.”
With that, he asked Autumn for another batch of fresh vegetables, meat, and eggs before heading back to the kitchen. Soon, the sounds of cooking echoed through the cave.
That evening, a thunderous explosion echoed from the foot of the mountain. The road leading to the summit was completely destroyed.
All of Leonel’s people gathered in the neighboring cave and officially entered lockdown.
Leonel even invited Autumn and David to join them for dinner.
Autumn went. David didn’t, but he sent a huge container of food with her.
