Chapter 36 The Shelter’s Finished
“The shelter is getting ready to implement a points system. The points will be accepted nationwide. I’ve already put 10,000 points into an account for you. If you ever want to visit the shelter, just let me know.” Leonel said casually, as if 10,000 points were nothing.
But Autumn knew exactly how valuable they were.
In her previous life, an ordinary worker earned ten points a day. That was just enough to cover a family’s basic living expenses.
Ten thousand points was nearly three years’ worth of wages.
It was an incredibly generous gift.
“Okay.” Autumn accepted Leonel’s kindness openly and said, “Once the weather cools down, I’ll go check out the shelter.”
And do a little trading while she was there.
The Everjoy Residences group chat wasn’t nearly as lively as it used to be.
After two months of extreme heat, almost every household in the complex had lost someone.
After two months of constant consumption, most of their stockpiles had been exhausted. Conflicts broke out everywhere. The ugliest sides of human nature began to take root.
Bullying the weak and harassment had become a common sight..
The authorities were still maintaining order, but they didn’t have enough people. Unless a crime was especially serious, most disputes ended with just a few words to calm things down, and that was it.
Of course, anyone who committed a major crime was executed without delay.
In times of chaos, harsh punishment keeps people in line. That has always been true.
While Autumn was comfortably holed up in her cave, she’d been treating the drama in Everjoy Residences like dinner entertainment.
Today, the group chat finally got lively again.
“The shelter’s finished. I’m going there! We made it! I never have to suffer in this oven again!”
“My whole family is going, too. I heard they provide food, housing, and air conditioning. That’s way better than here. I’m tired of the constant power and water rationing!”
I’m staying! No matter how nice the shelter is, it’s still not as comfortable as my own place. So many people crammed into one room? How could that possibly be good? My place might not be perfect, but I get the whole apartment to myself.”
Same here I heard you need 100 pounds of food per person if you want one of the nicer apartments. If I had that much food, why would I move into the shelter?”
Before long, the chat had split into two camps. One side wanted to leave, the other wanted to stay.
The two sides started fighting in the group chat right away.
In the end, it was the neighbor lady who stepped in to calm things down. “That’s enough Everyone, calm down. The heat’s making all of us short-tempered. Whether you go or stay, that’s your own call!”
Someone else agreed. “Exactly. Everyone should decide for themselves. There’s no point arguing.
The following evening.
Some residents packed their bags and left with their families to join the long line of people relocating to the shelter.
But a lot of people stayed behind. Most of them still had some supplies left. They were holding onto the hope that the disasters would end and life would return to normal.
The shelter was built on a broad hillside northwest of Karthmoor.
The location wasn’t bad.
