Chapter 39 Passing Out Again
As the temperature dropped, many people came outside and started walking around again.
Everyone wore smiles on their faces, as if the disaster had already passed and everything was about to return to normal. They greeted one another and looked forward to getting back to their ordinary lives.
“Whew, thank goodness I didn’t go to the shelter. I heard it was so overcrowded over there. So many people crammed into one room in that kind of heat. Can you imagine the smell?”
“Exactly. I knew better. Good thing I didn’t go. I already called my neighbor, and he said his whole family is coming back tomorrow.”
“Now that the temperature’s dropping, maybe we can even go back to work tomorrow!”
“Yeah, I really hope so, too. My family’s almost out of food. If I can’t get back to work soon, we’re really going to go hungry.”
“Oh, give me a break. Look at how healthy you look. You expect me to believe you’re starving? If you really didn’t have any food, you’d already be at the shelter!”
“Hehehe!”
Autumn only glanced at them before looking away.
She would let them enjoy these two happy days.
People needed something to look forward to, didn’t they?
Leonel also heard the conversations from the people along the roadside, and he couldn’t help glancing at Autumn.
This girl was as calm as ever. It seemed like nothing could affect her emotions anymore.
She really was becoming more and more intriguing.
They arrived at the entrance to the museum.
Everything around them was pitch-black.
Ever since the Skyfire disaster had destroyed the power substation, only the city’s essential facilities had their electricity restored. Nonprofit places like the museum only received power at scheduled intervals.
Besides, nobody came to museums anymore. It was hard enough just staying alive. Who still had the energy to care about art and culture?
That had given certain people the perfect opportunity to smuggle out a number of artifacts.
Most of the museum’s collection had already been transferred to the shelter, leaving only the items hidden in the underground vault.
Those treasures were their target tonight.
Lenel tapped away on his laptop as lines of code rapidly scrolled across the screen.
Autumn couldn’t help leaning over to take a look.
Yeah… she had no idea what she was looking at.
She wasn’t embarrassed in the slightest.
If she didn’t understand it, then she didn’t understand it. There were plenty of things she didn’t know. What was there to be embarrassed about? Leonel didn’t know how to kill people either. Was he embarrassed about that?
Leonel pressed the Enter key and said to Autumn, “Every password-protected door has been unlocked. Here’s the key for the front entrance. Thirty minutes. That’s enough?”
Autumn gave Leonel an OK sign, pushed open the car door, and slipped out with footsteps as light as a cat’s.
As soon as Autumn left, the driver turned to Leonel and said, “She doesn’t look like an ordinary young girl. The way she walks and carries herself… You can tell she’s been through plenty of real fights.”
“The mysteries surrounding her just keep piling up.” Leonel said. “Good thing we’re allies.”
Autumn unlocked the front entrance and slipped inside with practiced ease.
She pulled a glow stick from her pocket, twisted it gently, and it lit up the path ahead.
The vast, dark, empty space felt like a beast waiting for its prey to walk right into its jaws.
The hairs on the back of her neck instantly stood on end.
Autumn had wondered whether Leonel might be planning to ambush her here.
