Chapter 42 Flooded City
The two of them fell silent together.
Outside, the rain continued pouring down, and the air felt just as heavy as their moods.
On the fifth day of rain, the outside world had already turned into a vast floodplain.
The residents of Everjoy Residences who had insisted on staying in their homes finally gave in to reality and had no choice but to leave for the shelter.
The floodwaters kept rising, swallowing the third floor and nearly reaching the fourth.
There was nowhere left for them to hide.
The once lively Everjoy Residences homeowners’ group chat had become eerily quiet.
Whenever someone spoke, it was usually to express regret over not signing the relocation agreement sooner.
Maybe if they had accepted the buyout earlier, they could have used the money to stockpile supplies in advance instead of ending up in such a desperate situation.
Quite a few people in the group agreed. They complained that the few neighbors who had secretly signed the agreement had been incredibly sneaky. They must have gotten inside information but kept it to themselves, quietly taking the money without telling anyone else.
Meanwhile, the elderly woman from the neighborhood who had originally convinced everyone not to sign was cursed nonstop in the chat. If she hadn’t realized things were going badly and moved into the shelter ahead of time, the angry neighbors probably would have torn her apart to vent their rage.
After finishing the entertainment, Autumn adjusted her collar and diving suit, strapped on her oxygen tank, and got ready for another supply run.
This time, her targets were the hardware wholesale district she had scouted earlier and an industrial area in the suburbs.
The hardware district was completely silent. There wasn’t a single guard around, probably because nobody thought anyone would bother stealing hardware supplies.
So Autumn happily emptied out the entire hardware district and came away with an enormous haul.
The suburban industrial area mainly contained construction materials and cement plants, along with a few livestock farms.
However. Leonel had already collected countless top-quality cattle, sheep, and pigs from the grasslands, so Autumn had no interest in whatever livestock remained on those farms.
Besides, after three months of extreme heat, whether those animals had even survived was still anyone’s
So Autumn’s goal was crystal clear. She wanted all the construction materials.
Once things eventually settled down, they would definitely come in handy.
She started up her motorboat and headed toward the suburbs.
As she passed by a residential neighborhood, something happened, just as expected.
Someone had set up a barricade across the flooded street, blocking her boat.
“Hey, kid. This area’s under our control. If you want to pass through, you’ve got to pay a toll,” a cocky man said as he slapped the side of his inflatable raft with the flat of his knife. He looked at Autumn with obvious bad intentions. “We’re not asking for much. Ten pounds of grain will do.”
Without saying a word. Autumn pulled out a bag from behind her and tossed it to him.
Ten pounds of grain meant nothing to her.
But seeing how easily she handed it over, the man immediately realized she wasn’t short on food. His greedy eyes swept over her.
“That was yesterday’s price. Today’s price…” He grinned maliciously at Autumn. It’s doubled. Of course. you could always join us. Our group…”
